Subject Matter Expert for Live Transcription/Stenography (Canada, Remote)

Work Location: Remote/Work-from-home in Canada 

Work Schedule: Flexible schedule (preferred weekly availability is up to 3 hours) 

Engagement Model:  Freelance / Independent Contractor 

Start Date: April 2025 

Expected project duration: 1 month, with possibility of extension 

Hourly rate: 50 USD 

DataForce by TransPerfect is currently looking for a Subject Matter Expert for Live Transcription/Stenography projects.  

Role Summary 

The SME plays a pivotal role in evaluating applicants’ transcription samples and providing consultancy on guidelines and screening criteria for transcription roles.  

Role Responsibilities 

Evaluation of transcription samples 

• Review and assess transcription samples from applicants, focusing on accuracy, formatting, grammar, punctuation, speed, and overall transcription quality 

Provide feedback 

• Offer constructive feedback to applicants based on their performance in transcription tests 

Develop job description 

• Collaborate with project team to create comprehensive job descriptions that reflect the necessary skills and qualifications for the transcription role 

Screening criteria creation 

• Advise on the creation and refinement of the screening criteria/test for applicants, ensuring the criteria align with the requirements for the role and meet the industry standards 

Quality assurance 

• Ensure the evaluation process is consistent, fair and in line with best practices, helping to improve the overall recruitment strategy for transcription positions 

• Certification in live transcription or stenography/court reporter 

• Proven experience as a stenographer, transcriptionist or in a similar role with advanced knowledge of stenography techniques and live transcription standards 

• Strong understanding of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and formatting standards for transcription work 

• Ability to accurately evaluate transcription work based on specific quality criteria 

• Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and efficacy 

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to produce clear, concise, and accurate reports and documentation 

• Idiomatic fluency in English (Canada)
