POSITION PURPOSE
The Summer Youth Public Works Assistant supports the Department of Capital Infrastructure & Asset Management by assisting the Public Works team with a variety of community and infrastructure-related tasks throughout the summer. This position provides youth with hands-on work experience in public works, maintenance, infrastructure operations, and community services while building practical workplace skills in a supportive team environment. The successful candidate will work alongside Public Works staff to help maintain community spaces, support seasonal projects, and assist with general operational tasks that contribute to the well-being and safety of the community.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Public Works & Operational Support
Participate in job shadowing and guided tasks within multiple YG departments.
Assist the Public Works team with day-to-day operational and maintenance tasks.
Support community clean-up, beautification, and seasonal maintenance activities.
Assist with grounds maintenance, organizing tools and materials, and preparing work sites.
Support basic infrastructure, facilities, and community maintenance projects under supervision.
Help transport supplies, equipment, and materials as required.
Assist with community events, set-up, take-down, and other operational support activities as needed.
Departmental Learning & Development
Learn about the role of Public Works, infrastructure, and asset management within the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government.
Participate in hands-on learning opportunities and guided tasks with Public Works staff.
Ask questions, take initiative, and engage respectfully with supervisors and coworkers.
Participate in any required safety orientations or workplace certifications.
Participate in end-of-summer reflection activities or community recognition opportunities.

Represent the YG in a respectful and professional manner at all times.
Maintain confidentiality and follow workplace expectations.
Follow YG policies, health, and safety practices.
Use tools, equipment, and vehicles safely and responsibly.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Required:
Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of employment
Preferred:
Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ citizens and Indigenous youth are strongly encouraged to apply
Previous volunteer, outdoor, labour, maintenance, or work experience
Valid Class 5 or 7(N) Driver's Licence

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work takes place in outdoor, community, and operational settings
Tasks may include grounds maintenance, lifting materials, walking, standing, and general physical labour
Work may occur in varying weather conditions
Regular supervision, mentorship, and safety orientation will be provided
Use of safety equipment and tools may be required
Some travel within Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ territory or community work sites may be required
