Location

This position is eligible for a hybrid work model. When attending an event or meeting in person, your primary office location will be based out of Alton Community Centre. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands. Effective 2026 this role will be required to be on site 50% of the time each month.

Position Overview

Supervisor, Recreation Services – Inclusion will play a key role in creating environments where every community member feels welcome and supported. This position will lead and coordinate efforts to ensure participants of all abilities can safely and meaningfully engage in Recreation, Community, and Culture programming. Beyond accessibility, the role will champion Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) by promoting programs and practices that reflect the diverse needs, identities, and experiences of our community—fostering recreation spaces that are truly inclusive for all.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Recreation, Community, and Culture program areas to embed inclusive practices and DEI principles across all direct delivered service lines (e.g., aquatics, camps, fitness, seniors, youth).

  • Assist in policy development and evaluation of inclusion practices within recreation services while contributing to departmental planning processes by identifying emerging trends, community needs, and best practices in inclusive recreation.

  • Manage budget allocations related to inclusion services, including staffing, training, and adaptive equipment.

  • Partner with community organizations to enhance outreach and engagement of underrepresented or marginalized populations.

  • With Coordinator support oversee the hiring onboarding, training and assignment of 1:1 support workers, volunteers, or Specialized Instructors for programs offering inclusion opportunities.

  • Support and coach recreation staff in managing escalated behaviours through coaching, modelling, and direct intervention planning.

  • Develop and deliver training programs on behaviour management, de-escalation, communication tools (e.g., visual schedules, PECS), disability awareness and inclusive service delivery.

  • Conduct risk assessments and collaborate with families, caregivers, and professionals to gather relevant behavioural information before program start.

  • Gather and verify staff qualifications and regular maintenance of certifications to ensure staff remain eligible to work.

  • Lead the development and implementation of Individualized Support Plans for participants with high support needs.

  • Act as a liaison with families and external support agencies to ensure continuity of care and appropriate accommodation.

  • Track and document incidents, trends, and participant needs to inform future planning and staffing models.

Requirements

This position may require occasional travel between sites and/or City facilities.

Education:

Minimum

  • Diploma or degree in one of the following (or a closely related) fields:

  • Recreation and Leisure Studies

  • Therapeutic Recreation

  • Community or Human Services

  • Child and Youth Care

  • Social Work

  • Disability Studies

  • Psychology or Education (Special Education stream)

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Therapy, Community Development, Social Work, or Inclusive Education.

  • Post-graduate certificate or coursework in Behaviour Management or Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is an asset

  • Additional training or certification in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Accessibility, or Inclusive Leadership is preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum 3 years of related experience in recreation, community services, or disability support including at least 1 year in a leadership, supervisory, or training role.

Other Skills: Strategy Development, Strong understanding of inclusive recreation principles, accessibility standards (AODA), and human rights legislation.

Police Check Requirement

This position requires the successful candidate to provide a clear criminal record check and  a clear criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening at their own expense.

Additional Information

HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development, Behaviour Management System Training (or Equivalent) considered an asset. Position will require applicant to be certified in Standard First Aid with CPR-C at their own cost.
