Sustainability Officer – Facilities and Building Operations


Location Métis Nation Holdings Office, Edmonton, AB


Closing Date: June 2, 2024, or until suitable candidate found


Position Status: Full-time (40 hours/week) two-year contract, with the possibility of extension.

The Opportunity


The Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) is recruiting for a Sustainability Officer – Facilities and Building Operations based in Edmonton, Alberta. Reporting to the Métis Nation Holdings Operations Manager and working in collaboration with the MNA’s Environment and Climate Change Department, the successful candidate will be responsible for conducting a sustainability assessment for MNA facilities, providing a sustainability report with their findings, and developing and implementing a long-term sustainability plan in alignment with the MNA’s Climate Change Action Plan.


The Sustainability Report and the long-term Sustainability Plan will focus on understanding the status of overall climate impacts and sustainability within the MNA’s facilities and outline actionable recommendations on how to implement climate mitigation and adaptation measures. The plan will include recommendations with an emphasis on greenhouse gas emissions reductions, energy efficiency, waste minimization and recycling, water management, transportation, climate resilience and adaptation.


Key Responsibilities



  • Conduct a sustainability assessment of MNA facilities and produce a Sustainability and Climate Action Report which should include:

    • Current sustainability policies, programs, and goals,

    • Current methods for greenhouse gas emission tracking, and a summary of annual greenhouse gas emissions,

    • Current waste and recycling practices, and

    • Existing and planned climate change adaptation practices to improve resilience and reverse negative impacts of climate change.



  • Develop a long-term Sustainability and Climate Action Plan for the MNA’s facilities that aligns with the MNA’s organizational goals and values which should include:

    • Identification of opportunities for improvement in the overall sustainability with a focus on the areas of greenhouse gas emissions reductions, energy efficiency, waste minimization and recycling, water management, transportation, educating employees on sustainability, and other areas as required,

    • A recommended strategy to continue the ongoing tracking of utilities and greenhouse gas inventory,

    • A description of recommended actions to improve the sustainability performance of the above areas,

    • Costs and benefits associated with implementing recommended sustainability practices.



  • Develop and coordinate sustainability programs and initiatives that aim to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions associated with the operations of the MNA’s facilities and to increase the overall resilience of climate change impacts.

  • Schedule, attend, and carry our regular meetings with the MNA’s Environment and Climate Change Department.

  • Maintain awareness of government policies related to sustainability best practices and regulations within Alberta and Canada, including providing updates to senior management and making actionable recommendations, where necessary.

  • Represent the Facilities and Building Operations team at the MNA and Affiliates Climate Table quarterly meetings.

  • Work in collaboration with MNA departments and Affiliates to provide updates on progression, share lessons learned, and communicate successes regarding sustainability improvements within MNA facilities.

  • Identify and secure sources of funding for environmental sustainability projects.

  • Work closely with the maintenance team to familiarize and understand the operation, building envelope, and building systems of the MNA’s facilities.

  • Create and maintain relevant facility maintenance records for MNA facilities to support climate and sustainability initiatives.

  • Assist in organizing and coordinating maintenance projects and scheduling with various contractors and vendors.

  • Develop and maintain constructive working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including staff, leadership, partners, and the Métis community.

  • Present a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with employees, citizens visitors and other external stakeholders.

  • Other duties as required or assigned.


Skills & Competencies



  • Previous experience in ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) reporting, Greenhouse Gas Accounting, and/or conducting and reporting on Environmental and Climate Impact Assessments.

  • An understanding of environmental issues, sustainability practices, and the regulatory environment surrounding sustainability. This may include knowledge of energy and water conservation, waste reduction, greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable transportation, climate change adaptation and resilience, environmental impact assessments, and other relevant sustainability issues.

  • An ability to analyze sustainability data, conduct research, and identify trends. Proficiency in data analysis software is considered an asset.

  • The ability to manage complex sustainability projects, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation is of value.

  • The ability to think strategically and develop sustainability plans that align with the organization’s goals and values. An understanding of complexity and nuances of environmental policy and business politics is an asset.

  • Knowledge of CAD software and how to read building blueprints is considered an asset.

  • Understanding of construction process and best practices.

  • Technical knowledge of various building systems (ie. HVAC, plumbing, electrical) considered an asset.

  • Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Teams).

  • Ability to work both independently with little supervision, as well as in a team with all types of personalities.


Qualifications



  • Post-secondary education in Environmental Sciences, Sustainability, Environmental Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.

  • Equivalent relevant experience will be considered.

  • Experience in construction, HVAC, electrical, plumbing is considered an asset.

  • Possession of the following certifications, or similar, is considered an asset:

    • ESG Certification

    • LEED Green Associate or LEED Accredited Professional

    • Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP)

    • Sustainable Energy Practitioner (SEP)

    • Certified Environmental Practitioner (EP)

    • Certificate in Environmental Impact Assessment

    • Certified Energy Manager (CEM)




Other Requirements



  • Position will be based in Edmonton; in-office presence will be required.

  • Ability to work a regular schedule of Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM.

  • Availability to work evenings and weekends, on occasion, and with notice.

  • Travel within Alberta is a requirement, on occasion.

  • Must have Valid Class 5 Drivers’ License and reliable transportation.
