Job Description - Systems Administrator

Job Opportunity: Systems Administrator

Employee type: Full time, Permanent

Location: Calgary, Alberta

Forsite is actively looking for a Systems Administrator to join our ITS team. At Forsite, we don’t just work together – we support, challenge, and grow together. We are a company built on safety, trust, and the resolve to get things done – where teamwork is second nature, innovation is expected, and the work we do has real impact on people and landscapes across North America.

WHO WE ARE

Forsite is a geospatial intelligence company operating across Canada and the United States. Formed through the unification of six established organizations – Barr Air Patrol, Barr GeoSpatial Solutions, Airborne Imaging Inc., Northwest Management Inc., Forcorp, and Forsite Consultants Ltd. – we bring together more than 85 years of aerial heritage, North America's largest independent aerial LiDAR library, and decades of on-the-ground forestry and wildfire expertise into a single integrated platform.

Our Calgary office is home to our Airborne Imaging team, sitting at the centre of the large-scale LiDAR and aerial imagery operations our clients depend on. We are a company committed to innovation, with clients across North America and abroad in multiple sectors.

We take pride in our team culture, where supporting one another is second nature. We are a dynamic, people-focused business that thrives by delivering value to our customers, creating opportunities for our employees, and drawing on our expertise for sustainable solutions that balance economic, environmental, and social goals.

We foster and sustain a safe and respectful environment of diversity and inclusion where everyone can reach their full potential. If you're looking for a workplace that values collaboration, innovation, and having fun while making a meaningful impact, you'll fit right in.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Reporting to the ITS Manager, you will take ownership of IT infrastructure at our Calgary office – servers, storage, networking, backup, and end-user computing – while collaborating with the broader IT team across our other locations. This is a new position created to support our continued growth, and a real opportunity to shape how IT is delivered at the site.

  • Administer and maintain on-premises server, storage, and virtualization infrastructure, including high-capacity storage systems supporting large geospatial datasets

  • Own the implementation, monitoring, and regular testing of backups, disaster recovery, and business continuity for the Calgary site

  • Administer and maintain the local network, including switching, routing, firewalls, wireless, and VPN connectivity

  • Maintain server room infrastructure including UPS, power management, environmental monitoring, and capacity planning

  • Provide hands-on and remote IT support to employees; document, prioritize, and track requests and escalate as needed

  • Set up and maintain hardware including workstations, laptops, virtual machines, and peripherals

  • Administer user accounts, permissions, and security policies in Microsoft 365, Entra ID, and on-premises systems

  • Plan and execute installations, implementations, and upgrades of internal systems

  • Maintain accurate inventory and documentation of hardware, software, licences, and IT processes

  • Support company security initiatives including endpoint protection, patching, and incident response

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

Forsite welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and is looking for the right person to join our team. If you don't meet every requirement but bring relevant skills, experience, and a great attitude, we encourage you to apply!

Must have:

  • 5+ years of experience in systems administration or a similar hands-on IT infrastructure role

  • Strong knowledge of Windows Server administration and virtualization platforms (VMware ESXi or similar)

  • Experience with enterprise storage (NAS/SAN) and backup/disaster recovery solutions

  • Experience administering Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, and Entra ID

  • Solid networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, VPN)

  • Hardware configuration and troubleshooting experience, including the ability to rack and move server and network equipment

  • Proven documentation skills

Strong assets:

  • Experience with Ubiquiti, Fortinet, or Cisco Meraki

  • Experience supporting geospatial, remote sensing, or other data-intensive environments

  • Scripting and automation experience (PowerShell)

  • Experience with ZFS-based storage platforms

  • Relevant certifications (Microsoft, VMware, CompTIA, Cisco)

WHO YOU ARE

  • A problem solver who thinks critically and proactively identifies and resolves issues before they affect staff or production

  • Detail-oriented with strong documentation habits

  • Someone who thrives working independently while staying connected to a broader team

  • Adaptable and comfortable managing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Professional, friendly, and committed to delivering excellent service to your colleagues

WHAT WE PROVIDE

We offer a flexible and rewarding work environment, including:

  • Competitive compensation

  • Comprehensive benefits package

  • Company-matched pension program

  • Professional development support

  • Work-life flexibility

DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION

At Forsite, we are committed to fostering a work environment where everyone feels valued, respected and empowered to succeed. We believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation and strengthen our team. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, identities and experiences, including but not limited to Indigenous peoples, racialized individuals, persons with disabilities, women, LGBTQ2+ individuals, and veterans. If you require accommodation during the hiring process, please let us know – we are happy to support you.
