Job Description - Systems Technician

Systems & Maintenance Technician

Location: Blachford Lodge, Northwest Territories
Employment Type: Seasonal, Full-Time
Schedule: Rotational, lodge-based scheduling aligned with operational requirements
Reports To: Property & Systems Lead

About Blachford Lodge by Arctic Kingdom

Blachford Lodge by Arctic Kingdom is a premier remote northern hospitality destination located in the Northwest Territories. Accessible only by air, the lodge delivers immersive wilderness experiences while operating in one of Canada’s most unique and environmentally sensitive environments.

As part of the Arctic Kingdom portfolio, Blachford Lodge combines authentic northern adventure with operational excellence, safety, sustainability, and exceptional guest experiences.

Job Overview

The Systems & Maintenance Technician supports the safe, reliable operation of Blachford Lodge's physical infrastructure, mechanical systems, and grounds. Blachford Lodge is accessible only by air and operates entirely off-grid — there is no utility company, no on-call contractor, and no same-day parts delivery. Every system that keeps the lodge running, including power, heat, water, fuel, and sanitation, depends on the technical competency and reliability of the people maintaining it on-site.

Reporting to the Property & Systems Lead, this is a hands-on, broad-scope role spanning generator and boiler operation, fuel handling, water and wastewater systems, preventative maintenance, and general property and grounds upkeep. The position requires genuine mechanical aptitude, sound judgment around fuel and utility safety, and the physical capacity to perform sustained outdoor labour in a sub-Arctic environment across all seasons.

Because Blachford Lodge runs as a small, close-knit team, the Systems & Maintenance Technician may also be asked to support guiding or guest-facing operations when infrastructure responsibilities are fully covered and operational capacity allows. This cross-functional flexibility is a genuine expectation of the role, not an occasional exception.

CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES

Infrastructure and Utilities Support

  • Assist with the operation and monitoring of generators, boilers, heating systems, and fuel systems on a routine schedule

  • Support the safe handling and transfer of diesel, propane, pellet fuel, and related materials, following all fuel safety protocols

  • Assist with the operation of water supply, filtration, utilidor, and wastewater systems

  • Support hot tub monitoring, cleaning, and sanitation processes in accordance with lodge standards and applicable health regulations

  • Perform routine system inspections across all infrastructure categories and report concerns promptly to the Property & Systems Lead

  • Maintain accurate maintenance and fuel handling logs for all systems under his or her responsibility

  • Escalate any infrastructure or fuel-related concern immediately — this is a safety-critical reporting responsibility, not a discretionary one

Preventative Maintenance and Repairs

  • Support the lodge's preventative maintenance program across mechanical, electrical, and structural systems

  • Perform basic repairs and troubleshooting tasks under the supervision and direction of the Property & Systems Lead

  • Maintain tools, equipment, and mechanical spaces in clean, organized, and safe working condition

  • Assist contractors and external service providers working on-site, supporting their work safely and efficiently during their limited time at the property

Property and Grounds Maintenance

  • Perform snow removal and general site safety maintenance across guest and operational areas

  • Cut, split, stack, and transport firewood to support lodge heating needs

  • Maintain trails, access routes, and outdoor areas in safe, usable condition across all seasons

  • Assist with helipad and airstrip clearing to maintain safe air access to the property

  • Support freight handling and material movement as aircraft deliveries arrive at the lodge

Sanitation and Environmental Support

  • Assist with the operation and maintenance of composting toilet systems

  • Support environmental stewardship and waste management practices consistent with the lodge's off-grid, low-impact operating model

  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized workspaces across all mechanical and storage areas

Team and Operational Support

  • Work collaboratively within a small remote lodge team, supporting colleagues across departments as operational needs require

  • Support operational priorities during peak guest periods, contributing wherever capacity allows

  • Assist with guest-facing or guiding activities when infrastructure responsibilities are fully covered and operational capacity permits

QUALIFICATIONS

Mandatory Requirements

  • Experience with generators, heating systems, plumbing, fuel systems, or other remote infrastructure

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and hands-on maintenance experience

  • Previous experience in a remote camp, lodge, hospitality, or outdoor operations setting

  • Valid driver's licence

  • Carpentry, electrical, or small engine repair skill

  • Wilderness First Aid certification

  • Bear or wildlife awareness training relevant to the boreal Northwest Territories environment

  • Experience operating snowmobiles, ATVs, or other small utility vehicles

Additional Qualifications

  • Ability to work safely and effectively in a remote northern environment with limited external support

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills

  • Physical capability to perform lifting, carrying, snow removal, and sustained outdoor labour

  • Comfort working both independently and as part of a small team

  • Demonstrated adaptability, reliability, and a genuine safety-first mindset

  • Standard First Aid and CPR/AED certification

  • WHMIS certification, or willingness to complete training upon hire, given regular exposure to fuel and hazardous materials
