Job Description - Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments

This is a position of special responsibility. A Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TSVI) supports and equips site-based staff to design academically and socially-inclusive learning communities. They are part of the District Learning Support Services staff and report to the District Principal of Learning Support Services. TSVIs gather and interpret assessment documentation to confirm eligibility for DeafBlind (Category B) and Visual Impairment (Category E) designations. They serve students through the itinerant model of service delivery and may travel to schools where students who have visual impairments are enrolled to provide service through direct and consultative modes: Direct Service involves working directly with the student with a visual impairment towards goals set out in the students’ individualized programming plan. Consultative Service involves collaborative work with the student’s educational team to ensure that the sum of the student’s educational program is made meaningful and accessible based on the student’s functional vision profile. POSTING DETAILS Position - Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TSVI) Start Date – September 2024 Schedule - Full Time Employment – Permanent Location(s) - School Board Office POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES Nurture the gifts of all students Equip site-based staff to develop their professional practice Co-design and co-teach with Classroom and Resource Teachers Model inclusive strategies and practices (e.g. Universal Design for Learning, assessment, and interventions) Model and support Trauma-informed practices, like PEACEful School Strategies Model attuned relationships and joyful, responsive interactions with all members of the community Support the implementation and development of Langley School District’s Framework for Teaching and Learning Practice Risk-taking and Appreciative Inquiry Plan and present in-services and professional development activities participate in ongoing professional development collaborate with other district staff including District Inclusive Education Teachers, Occupational Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists, Physiotherapists, Psychologists, and Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to support educational teams Assist schools with transitions for students Attend School-based Team meetings as required Participate and liaise with Provincial Outreach Programs and other community agencies Deploy equipment and provide training Share in development and implementation of IEPs with Learning Resource teachers and classroom teachers Provide IEP progress data and complete required documentation for audit purposes Provide guidance to students in hearing loss, auditory management, and hearing aid use Provide instruction in braille, as required, and visual skills Work with Educational Assistant - Braille, Orientation & Mobility Specialists and other educational partners Share resources and educational information with parents. Perform other related duties as assigned REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Master’s Degree or graduate’s diploma or in a Masters of Education in the area of visual impairments The University of British Columbia offers both MA and MEd options in Special Education with an emphasis in Visual Impairment. Further information can be found HERE Bachelor of Education (Elementary / Middle / Secondary) degree, or equivalent training. A valid Teacher Regulation Branch Certificate Five years teaching experience in the K-12 education system A valid BC Driver's License and a reliable vehicle for transportation during the workday Demonstrated understanding of philosophy and practice of academic and social inclusion Demonstrated leadership within educational settings Demonstrated ability in effective communication, oral and written Ability to self-direct and self-manage in a high-performance environment Proven experience in working in collaborative, collegial teams Ability to establish and maintain rapport and effective working relationships with all members of the community Proven experience in providing inclusive educational environments for students Proficiency in Office 365 applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams For your application to be considered, all required documents must be included: Resume Cover Letter (please elaborate on your experience) A copy of your transcript (official or unofficial) for your B.Ed program A copy of the credential received after completing your teaching program A graduate diploma, or equivalent in Visual Impairment A copy of your Certificate of Qualification (from the TRB to teach in BC) Scanned copy of your valid BC Driver’s license Recent copy of your driver’s abstract/history (obtained from ICBC) Email addresses for a minimum of three references (ideally, administrators from your most recent teaching role) PLEASE NOTE The starting annual salary for this School Teacher position ranges from $50,000 to $104,000, with placement on the range based on length of service and qualifications in accordance with the collective agreement.
