Description

ASL19, Farsi for Article 19, is a technology and media organization that helps people access information, circumvent censorship and counter misinformation. Our team is based in Toronto but currently working hybrid. We are recruiting a TechnicalCommunity Coordinator to coordinate an Iran-focused Incident Response and Shutdown Task Force as well as support overall organizational communications and development work. You will be reporting to the Development and Communications Manager and will often work in partnership with other teams and stakeholders. 

Our ideal candidate is a tech savvy, detail-oriented, an effective communicator, and preferably with experience in community coordination and working with technical communities. We are looking for a passionate, self-driven and positive individual with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. 

As our projects incorporate high user security and privacy protections, we require the successful candidate to understand user privacy and discretion, and can hold themselves to high standards of confidentiality and integrity. Our team is highly collaborative, and we will do our best to support your work and provide room for growth.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate an Iran-focused Incident-Response and Shutdown Task Force
  • Ensure smooth flow of online and in-person events, including managing registration, liaising with session moderators, notetakers, etc
  • Deliver bi-monthly online sessions
  • Facilitate in-person working group sessions at international events
  • This role will involve international travel to plan and organize community events and meet with community stakeholders
  • Liaise with external partners and contractors, including venues and vendors, for in-person events 
  • Manage event budget and financials, including receipts and compliance documentation
  • Coordinate the logistics for participants’ travel and accommodation, including visas, for in-person events
  • Utilize existing online platforms to share the Task Force’s learning and updates with the wider community
  • Host emergency meetings during times of crisis and heavy disruptions as needed
  • Onboarding and integrating new members within the group 
  • Documenting and reporting on community activities and impacts to our key stakeholders
  • Work with the Development and Communication Manager in writing and coordinating proposals and reports, including copyediting internet freedom project materials and reports produced by colleagues
  • Support ASL19’s internal communications, including necessary brainstorming, writing, coordination and maintenance
  • Other administrative and support tasks as relevant to this position

Qualifications:

  • Experience in the following areas:
  • Co-creating  resources in support of community engagement activities
  • Collaborating on strengthening and building new partnerships with tool developers 
  • Organizing community meetings and events, including facilitating and coordinating online and in-person sessions
  • Project management
  • Strong knowledge of internet freedom issues/censorship, internet shutdown and circumvention work in Iran (or other relevant countries)
  • Knowledge of technologies to respond to internet shutdowns and censorship
  • Experience with systems such as GitLab
  • Awareness of privacy-by-design practices and respect for our users' privacy
  • Largely self-directed, motivated, and organized
  • Excellent documentation and written communications skills with attention to detail
  • Fluency in English is essential
