Job Description - Technician, Integrated Water Management

Credit Valley Conservation is one of Ontario’s 36 conservation authorities dedicated to protecting, restoring and enhancing our local natural environment. Summary of Functions

This position will help in the development and implementation of programs and projects that further CVC’s objectives in the area of integrated water management. This includes assisting in the delivery of integrated water management projects and the coordination of event and workshops.

Eligibility Requirements

Education

  • Post-secondary education in water resources, environmental sciences/studies, engineering, geography, landscaping/horticulture and/or related discipline

Experience

  • 2 yrs experience in the water resources field

Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Knowledge in GI LID and integrated water management
  • Strong knowledge in ArcGIS
  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access
  • Strong written and oral communication skills to convey technical data in reports, summaries, and oral presentations.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Other key abilities include multi-tasking, organizational skills, critical thought and high attention to detail.
  • Ability to support the preparation of funding applications, and partnership development.

Summary of Major Tasks

Water Resources Management Policy Support, Knowledge Transfer and Translation

  • Preparing, writing, editing reports, fact sheets, standard operating procedures, case studies and guidance documents for the technical community and the general public
  • Present at team, department meetings, workshops
  • Present at conferences about GI LID as well as general hydrology and water quality research
  • Operate booths at trade shows and provide information to attendees.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to produce policies, guidelines, and strategies related to water management objectives.
  • Help develop implementation plans and frameworks that translate policy to on the ground action.
  • Provide general environmental presentations for students during visits to schools, as well as led field tours.

Integrated Water Management Implementation

  • Conduct desk top analysis and field investigation of sites for LID implementation such as school rain gardens.
  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams to complete the design, construction, and maintenance of school rain gardens.
  • Complete subwatershed drainage analysis using ArcHydro, ArcGIS
  • Develop minor and major system drainage maps including stormwater infrastructure such as catch basins, maintenance holes, outfalls, pipes etc.
  • Engage students and teachers with school rain garden planting, inspection, and maintenance.
  • Perform site maintenance with tasks including planting, weeding, and cleaning (removing debris from rain gardens)
  • Complete site inspections and checklists; includes taking photographs and noting site appearance and maintenance needs.
  • Engage in ongoing communication with Peel District School Board and Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Boards updating them on applicable project milestones.
  • Collect technical and financial information for feasibilities studies that enable wide scale GI LID implementation.
  • Document the operation, monitoring, maintenance procedures of a smart blue roof system.
  • Review and identify ongoing maintenance tasks needed for the STEP life cycle costing tool.
  • Collect cost data, conduct, and review financial analysis of GI LID as it relates to communal stormwater management systems and co-benefits of green infrastructure.
  • Review and assess consultant work.
  • Participate on multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Co-author the preparation of funding applications.

Professional Education and Training (STEP)

  • Support the development, refinement and implementation of the STEP marketing plan and the delivery of training workshops.
  • Set up registration, hand out materials, and answer registrant questions for STEP events (i.e. municipal design charrettes or workshops)
  • Develop STEP course training content.
  • Develop and deliver webinars on projects or programs for STEP webinar series.
  • Support the branding of STEP.
  • Support content management.
  • Support content creation.
  • Participate on STEP working committees.
  • Other duties and projects as appropriate to the position.
