Position Purpose & Overview

The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) Individuals & Societies and Language & Literature (English) teacher will assist in the development of respective curriculum programs. Teachers at SJS are expected to exemplify excellent professional practice and high standards of teaching and learning. The teacher will provide learning opportunities differentiated to the needs, abilities and stage of development of each student. The successful candidate will be adept at monitoring, measuring, documenting, and reporting on learning. The successful candidate supports student wellbeing, participates in co-curricular commitments of the school, and is reliable in exercising their daily responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate MYP Individuals & societies and Language & literature (English) learning in Grades 6 & 7. May teach courses in another MYP or DP subject, based on experience, qualifications, and interest.
  • Create a safe, effective, challenging, ethical and organized learning environment.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of and passion for the subject areas.
  • Collaborate and determine professional learning needs for the respective departments.
  • Design, prepare and deliver learning activities that facilitate insightful engagement.
  • Identify and select instructional resources and methods to meet student needs.
  • Maintain relevant understanding of and be active in using relevant and effective technology to enhance instruction and learning.
  • Design and implement creative assessments for both monitoring and measuring student learning.
  • Provide insightful and timely feedback to students.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress for the purposes of teaching, learning, and reporting.
  • Participate in faculty and parent meetings and special events.
  • Model respectful and timely communication with students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Endorse the school’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Attend professional development programmes, participating in “on campus” courses and attending professional meetings which relate to curricular, administrative or organizational matters as required; scheduled by the Head of Department, Curriculum Coordinators and Senior Management Team.
  • Assess, record, and report on the growth of student success in alignment with the MYP subject objectives, criteria, guidelines, and the school’s assessment policy and practices.
  • Provide differentiated instruction for all learners to establish an inclusive learning environment.
  • Collaborate with relevant staff on the preparation and development of; courses, teaching materials, scope and sequence, and methods of teaching and assessment.
  • Engage or offer co-curricular activity(ies) for Senior school students.
  • Demonstrate reliability in and understanding of implementation of risk and student management strategies.

This role will require working hours outside of school office hours: often evening events; occasionally going offsite to document student programs; and occasional morning and weekend commitments.

On rare occasions where there are urgent needs at the School, an employee may be assigned to temporarily backfill role(s) critical to the school’s operations and business continuity.

    • Internal: Faculty, non-teaching employees, payroll administrator, School Principals, and Assistant Principals.
    • External: Parents, Alumni, and Teacher’s Regulation Branch

Job Information

  • Full-time contract position starting from August 23, 2024 to June 3, 2025. The contract may be extended based on needs of the school.
  • Annual Salary ranges from $62,133 to $116,773 based on the school’s teacher salary grid. Placement on the grid is assigned in accordance with level of education and years of teaching experience.
  • Annual salary is prorated based on the length of the contract.

Required Qualifications and Key Skills

Education & Work Experience

  • A valid BC Certification of Teaching.
  • Completion of a Bachelor of Education degree.
  • Need to be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • A Basic First Aid certificate is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the International Baccalaureate programmes.
  • Experience and adept understanding of teaching Individuals & Societies (Social Studies) and Language & literature (English) in a middle school or upper elementary school setting.
  • Knowledge of the MYP curriculum framework is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of MYP Service as Action is considered an asset.

Conditions of Employment

  • The successful candidate will be required to complete child abuse prevention training, concussion training, Level 1 first-Aid training provided by St. John’s School and provide consent for a criminal background check for vulnerable sector.
  • Clearance on criminal record check for vulnerable sector is a condition of employment.
  • Ability to legally work in Canada, in an educational setting is a condition of employment.
