The Lethbridge Police Service is currently accepting applications for a full-time permanent Watch Team Lead with an anticipated start date of October 2026.

We are looking for a trained, prepared, and results-oriented team member who demonstrates professionalism and is committed to providing exemplary public service in support of the community and the police service to fill the role of full-time Watch Team Lead with the Lethbridge Police Service.

The Watch Program is a volunteer-based initiative of Lethbridge Police Service with the objective of enhancing the community as a safe and friendly place for everyone to live, work, shop and enjoy, through social outreach, connection and intervention. Members of The Watch manage a range of issues and events that historically involved police intervention, but in reality, are not part of core police functions and most do not require police intervention. 

The Watch Team Leads conduct foot patrols with their team in the downtown area providing a multitude of services such as giving directions, providing first aid, tourist information and whatever other assistance they can that is required by whomever is in need.  The Watch acts as the eyes and ears of social and community services agencies and our emergency service providers.

Reporting to The Watch Manager, The Watch Team Lead is a unique opportunity for an individual with a passion and commitment for serving other people and playing a role in ensuring our community is a welcoming and safe place for everyone.

The Watch Team Lead will guide a team of volunteers to provide a highly visible presence in the downtown area.  They will work in partnership with stakeholders and other service providers, volunteers and other Team Leads in meeting the goals of The Watch and the police service.  They will be responsible for planning patrols in their assigned area, providing direction and guidance to volunteer team members, providing social outreach and support when required and completing written reports on activities and incidents in accordance with policy.

Wage:                   $25.77 per hour (2026 Rate)

Hours:                   Full‑time; average of 42 hours per week.

Schedule:            We operate 7 days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Full‑time staff work 12‑hour shifts on a rotating 4‑days‑on / 4‑days‑off cycle, which includes days, evenings, and weekends.

This permanent full-time position with the City of Lethbridge/Lethbridge Police Service includes a comprehensive flexible benefits package and defined benefit pension plan (LAPP).

The Watch Team Leader will:

• Provide on street coordination of the assigned volunteers


• Provide assistance to any person wishing to access any social supports they require


• Document all activities and events they are part of, or witness, in their notebook


• Ensure written reports are completed accurately and submitted as required


• Utilize radio communications to record activities and events with the Public Safety Communications Centre, and to summon appropriate emergency service when required


• Engage with all people in the community and work to build lasting relationships


• Reach out and offer help whenever it is needed


• Support other social agencies and public outreach organizations in their work when required


• Participate in training activities


• Coordinate requests for a Safe Walk


• Other related duties as assigned by The Watch Manager and/or Staff Sergeant of Support Services

The successful candidate will:

• Be 18 years of age or older


• Have a valid AB Class 5 Driver’s License (Non-GDL License Required)


• Have demonstrated strong leadership and decision-making skills


• Be able to follow written and verbal instructions


• Provide excellent customer service


• Be empathetic, friendly, enthusiastic and outgoing with a positive attitude


• Be a good team player who contributes positively to their team


• Be physically fit and able to walk many kilometers a day


• Have strong communication skills both oral and written, as well as great interpersonal skills


• Have an awareness and understanding of Indigenous culture and history


• Prior basic LPS Watch Volunteer/Team Lead training or equivalent training courses would be considered an asset.


• Have an awareness of diverse demographics and cultures within the City of Lethbridge


• Be familiar and knowledgeable of the City of Lethbridge

The following skills are considered assets:

• Familiarity in dealing with matters related to mental health and addictions


• Valid CPR and First Aid Certification

The successful candidate is required to consent to a police security clearance, which includes the voluntary completion and submission of a personal disclosure form (lifestyle questionnaire), criminal and police records check, reference checks and truth verification through polygraph examination.

STEPS OF HIRING PROCESS

2. Interview, Personal Disclosure Form (PDF), and (for external applicants) Security Clearance Declaration - Selected applicants will be contacted to schedule a Behavioral Descriptive Interview. As part of this stage:

• External applicants/non‑LPS employees will be required to complete a Personal Disclosure Form (PDF) and a Security Clearance Declaration.


• Internal LPS employees will be required to complete a Personal Disclosure Form (PDF) if they have not previously completed a Polygraph Examination with LPS and are applying to a position requiring a higher level of access than their current role.

2. Polygraph Examination Procedure - Successful applicants will be required to complete a Polygraph Examination Procedure.

Further, LPS facility dogs support the emotional needs of victim’s and or witnesses through the Criminal Justice Process. A Facility Dog is directed by a professional with specialized expertise. Facility dogs frequent many areas of our building. In addition, we have police service dogs. Our police service dogs have minimal interaction with employees on site under the supervision of a trained handler.
