What you will be doing:

The ohpikîhakan Foster Care program at The Family Centre has a unique approach to foster care that emphasizes the holistic needs of children and youth, including a strong emphasis on cultural and relational connection, as well as reunification with family and community. In this model, caregivers receive extensive initial and ongoing training, are supported by therapeutic supervisors, and are an integral part of the circle of support surrounding children, youth, and their families. 

The Therapeutic Supervisor is involved in the training, equipping, and supervision of caregivers. Therapeutic Supervisors in this program provide a high level of support for the caregivers of marginalized children and youth ages 0-17 who have Children and Family Services involvement. This includes a significant proportion of Urban Indigenous, First Nations, Metis, and Inuit individuals, refugees and first-generation Canadians, and 2SLGBTQ+ individuals that have experienced the impacts of colonization, trauma, and multigenerational abuse and neglect. 

The Therapeutic Supervisor is a member of the ohpikîhakan Foster Care program as well as the TFC Leadership team, which is comprised of managers and supervisors from all different service areas of The Family Centre. The Therapeutic Supervisor reports to the Manager of Foster Care.

This is a full-time position (36.5 hours per week), with evening and weekend availability required. 

  • Supporting the recruitment and onboarding processes for new caregivers.
  • Utilizing evidence-based therapeutic interventions from both Western and Indigenous frameworks.
  • Regularly meeting in caregivers’ homes to provide therapeutic supervision, including providing ongoing teaching and support.
  • Responding to emergencies and incidents, and reviewing associated critical incident reports. 
  • Providing ongoing group supervision to caregivers with a focus on clinical consults, Trauma Informed Care, and related approaches. 
  • Auditing files to ensure that required paperwork is completed, and objectives are met ethically.
  • Completing and following up on annual Caregiver Development Plans. 
  • Monitoring and analyzing qualitative and quantitative program and client data to support program development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Encouraging ongoing professional development and self-care strategies for caregivers. 

What you will bring to the role:

  • Minimum Master’s degree in psychology, therapy, counseling, or related field. 
  • Certified and registered with a professional association and in good standing.
  • Minimum of three years of experience with counseling or experience working with vulnerable families in a therapeutic or supervisory role.
Background Check Process & Requirement:
  • Police Information Check- Vulnerable Sector 
  • Child Intervention Records Check 
  • Our Children Are Sacred Youth Suicide Prevention Training or ASIST Suicide Intervention Training, required within 3 months of start date
  • Standard First Aid Level C CPR 
  • Reliable Vehicle, available for regular use and valid driver’s license
