About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Topman to join construction crews working on various municipal water, sewer, and underground infrastructure projects.
Reporting to the Foreman, the Topman is responsible for helping ensure the safe and efficient flow of work around the excavation. This includes directing equipment operators, checking grades, assisting with shoring and underground installations, and supporting the Foreman with day-to-day site activities.
The Topman will also take on a leadership role within the crew, helping guide less experienced workers and ensuring work is completed safely and to a high standard.
Key Responsibilities
Shoot and check grades using a transit
Read and interpret construction drawings and plans
Assist with the installation of various shoring systems
Guide excavator operators and take grade shots to achieve the required excavation depth
Assist the Foreman with daily paperwork and crew/subcontractor organization
Direct traffic as required
Direct and signal heavy equipment operators
Participate in toolbox talks and provide leadership on site
Cut and bevel pipe as required
Install and repair water and sewer infrastructure
Perform manual and physically demanding construction tasks
Instruct and guide crew members on job tasks
Mentor and support less experienced workers
Operate industrial equipment and hand tools
Properly rig pipe when lowering materials into trenches or connecting to excavator buckets
Load and unload tools, materials, and equipment
Follow all company and site safety procedures
Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
Previous experience working as a Topman or in a similar underground construction role
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. unaided
Class 5 Driver’s Licence
Confined Space Entry/Monitor certification
Ability to read construction drawings and understand grades and elevations
Experience working around heavy equipment and underground utilities
Strong communication and leadership skills
Ability to work safely and effectively as part of a crew
Preferred Qualifications
Rigging and Hoisting certification
Fall Protection
CSTS 2020
WHMIS 2015
H2S Alive
Crane Signals certification
Experience with municipal water and sewer construction
Working Conditions
Physically demanding work requiring standing, kneeling, bending, lifting, and working in various positions
Outdoor work in all weather conditions
Work in dusty, underground, and confined environments, including sewer systems
Work around heavy equipment, excavation sites, and construction materials
Commitment to maintaining a safe and professional work environment
