Job Description - Training and Education Assistant

Date: June 2025


Department: Learning and Engagement


Reports to: Manager, Training and Education


Status: Contract Full-Time (8-week contract, beginning in June 2025)


Rate of Pay: $26.00 Per Hour


Location: Etobicoke, ON


Time Required on Site: 40%

Second Harvest is Canada’s largest food rescue organization and is a global thought leader on perishable food redistribution. We work with thousands of food businesses from across the supply chain to redirect unsold surplus food to non-profit organizations that feed communities in every province and territory. Our mission is to keep food where it belongs: On plates and out of landfills. 


The Role


The Training and Education Assistant will support the development and delivery of Second Harvest’s Training and Education Program, focusing on engaging Second Harvest’s non-profit network, children and youth. This position will assist in creating and facilitating training sessions, developing resources, and preparing materials for initiatives like non-profit food waste prevention trainings, school programs, youth camps, and public engagement.


Your Impact



  • Youth Engagement: Assist in building and expanding youth-focused training programs, including school-based initiatives and Feeding Our Future camps.

  • Training Facilitation: Support and deliver training sessions to children and students, staff, volunteers and program participants, promoting food literacy, waste reduction, food safety and nutrition knowledge.

  • Resource Development: Support with the development of Second Harvest’s Safe Food Handler Certification course, which will include creating presentation decks, speaking notes, training materials, educational resources, etc.

  • Program Preparation: Help prepare for school-year activities by organizing training schedules, materials, and outreach efforts.

  • Core Training Support: Learn and deliver Second Harvest ‘score food waste reduction to diverse audiences in a dynamic and engaging manner.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Manager, Training and Education, and other team members to ensure the program’s success and alignment with organizational goals.

  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned to support the overall goals of the organization.

For example, we use this skill to make hiring decisions, select courses of action and troubleshoot technical failures.

  • Reading and/or Writing - The ability to find, understand, use, or share information presented through written words, symbols, and images. For example, reading is used to locate information on forms and drawings, and to read items such as emails, reports, news articles, blog posts and instructions. Writing is used to fill out forms and applications, and write emails, reports and social media posts.

  • Funded through Canada Summer Jobs, to be eligible, candidates must:

    • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.

    • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment, and

    • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
