Job Description - Training Instructor *Limited to members of the Edmonton Firefighters Union

As a Training Instructor with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS), you will instill cooperation, enthusiasm, dedication, and teamwork as you design, develop, deliver, and evaluate theoretical classroom and practical training programs for members of EFRS, other organizations and communities in order to meet the professional qualification requirements for Firefighters. This position will be assigned to a training portfolio once the successful candidate has been identified. Additional training responsibilities are listed below that could be assigned by the Chief Training Officer:
  • Medical training relating to Red Cross Advanced First Aid (AFA) Training ,CPR programs, and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) certification and any other medical programs, procedures, or protocols
  • Train EFRS recruits to departmental competency standards (NFPA 1001 level II) as well as core competencies for firefighters in fire rescue, vehicle extrication, wildland fire incidents, and HAZMAT (NFPA 1072)
  • Professional Driver certification, Apparatus Operations, Incident Command, and other required areas
  • Train EFRS Firefighter Qualified (FFQ) and Captain Qualified (CaptainQ) candidates to EFRS’s competency standards in all aspects of leadership including roles and responsibilities, organizational skills, interpersonal communication, time management, conflict resolution, media relations, incident command, safety codes, station and fire district routines, emergency planning, legal issues, customer service, diversity and ethical training, and occupational health and safety issues
  • Train EFRS instructor candidates to NFPA 1041 competency standards or equivalent that deal with the principles of adult education, techniques of teaching, processes for developing training programs, and tasks related to managing and supervising training programs
  • Research and develop innovative approaches to the evolving fire rescue environment by participating in Department's technical committees, assessing fire rescue training needs, and identifying potential solutions, recommendations, and program development criteria
  • Provide fire ignition officer and safety officer support for practical training programs
  • Employee assessment, including documentation, maintaining training records, and other related administrative functions
  • Monitor, assess and run programming and training within the Edmonton Fire Cadets program
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by technical fire industry courses and courses in training techniques
  • Minimum 5 years experience as a First Class Firefighter in the Edmonton Fire Rescue Operations Grouping
  • Experience as an Adjunct Training Instructor, a Training Instructor, or a Platoon Training Coordinator
  • National Fire Protection Association Level 1 Instructor Certification to be attained within the first year of being in the role
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and present training programs/modules
  • Ability to liaise with other areas with Fire Rescue Services such as the Duty Office
  • Awareness of adult learning principles, program development, assessment, and evaluation
  • Demonstrated ability in coaching, mentoring, leadership, facilitation, and team building skills
  • Demonstrated ability in problem-solving and strong critical thinking
  • Ability to work with a high degree of independent judgement and proactively manage complex projects
  • Ability to set goals, monitor progress and adjust resources to accomplish objectives
  • Seniority will be the determining factor. Should insufficient qualified applicants be received, consideration may be given to applicants with no less than 7 years of seniority within the Fire Rescue Operations Grouping
  • Applicants must be physically fit to perform all functions that may be required in the role of a Training Instructor
  • Applicants are expected to be available during training school normal working hours for the full duration of this posting
  • Within 24 months of appointment, complete the Academy Onboarding Program. Including completion of Fire Training Instructor Certifications
  • Certifications as per assigned portfolios
  • Valid Alberta Class 3 driver's license (or provincial equivalent) is required

  • Effective March 5 2017, hours of work at the EFRS Academy will be 10 hours/day Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday 07:00 - 17:00. Hours of work may also be on four (4) on four (4) off rotation.
Up to 1 permanent full-time position available

Hours of Work: 80 Hours Biweekly, on a 4 on 3 off shift consisting of 4 x 10 hour day shifts, followed by 3 days off. Hours of work may temporarily change for individual programs where necessary. (As per Letter #7 of the current Collective Agreement: The City shall be entitled to change the hours of work for the Training Officers)

Salary: $62.578 (Hourly); $130,662.860 (Annually)
