The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has openings for casual call-in Transfer Station Operator – Lead positions (Wallaceburg Transfer Station) in the Public Works division. This casual call-in positions may work 0-24 hours per week.


Job description


The Transfer Station Operator (Lead) is responsible for the entire operation of the site, including the leaf and yard waste component (where applicable), issues receipts for the collection of waste fees and directs ratepayers as to the use of the proper waste and recycling containers on site. This will include the operation of a weigh scale, hydraulic compactor unit, and front-end loader to load and pack waste containers and move large volumes/items on-site (where applicable).


Essential responsibilities



  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies

  • Responsible for keeping the facility and grounds clean and safe at all times for worker and public use

  • Maintain all equipment in good working order

  • Oversee building, grounds maintenance, and equipment issues as required

  • Schedule the removal of prepared waste/recycling with the waste contractor dispatch

  • Prepare waste/recycling for transfer to landfill/material recovery facilities

  • Process customers disposing of waste/recycling and apply applicable fees as required

  • Compile cash receipts and/or weigh bills

  • Answer and refer public inquiries on services available and applicable payment structure


Essential qualifications



  • Secondary School Diploma, or equivalent education (e.g. GED certificate), with six (6) months to two (2) years of related experience

  • Experience working at a waste transfer station preferred

  • Experience operating a front-end loader and lift truck

  • Experience handling cash

  • Experience keeping grounds clean and safe

  • Excellent customer service skills in a business environment, including working in a team environment, assisting customers face-to-face and handing complaints

  • Travelling to, and working at, various Transfer Stations as required


Certifications, memberships, licenses



  •  Counter Balance Fork Lift certificate an asset


Work environment/hours of work



  • This position works both indoors and outdoors

  • This position works weekday and weekend hours


Driver’s licence/vehicle requirements


Because this position would be required to travel, a valid Province of Ontario driver's licence with a reliable motor vehicle is necessary.


Background check requirements


Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment.


Essential physical and/or safety requirements



  • Requires steel toe safety shoes/boots and clothing

  • Walking: constant walking on both level and rough surfaces

  • Standing: frequent standing outside; constant standing inside

  • Foot action: constant two feet


Benefits


This casual call-in position has an hourly wage of $23.60 to $29.50 and will receive vacation and statutory benefits in accordance with Employment Standards Act.
