Underwriting & Business Development Analyst (hybrid)

The P&C Market Unit team is responsible for Swiss Re's Property, Casualty and Special Lines business relationships in Canada and the English Caribbean. We are an experienced and cohesive group of Property and Casualty Treaty Underwriters focused on a) steering our portfolio to achieve long term profitable underwriting results, while b) delivering best-in-class service for our clients' delight and our personal growth. About the role

We are looking for a pro-active, highly motivated and result oriented individual with an entrepreneurial and sales mindset. The main responsibility will be split into three key areas: a) support the team to grow the business through new and non-standard opportunities, b) manage our book of bifurcated treaties, and c) support the Senior Client Underwriters working on the core book of annual renewal business.

In addition to working closely with the broader cross-functional team internally (i.e. Business Development, Client Underwriters, CUO underwriters, Claims, Business Services, Technical Accounting, etc), externally you will be the key contact for our Broker partners on bifurcated deals and new opportunities that are presented to us.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to, and proactively identify, new and non-standard opportunities through our broker partners for whom you will act as the key contact by building, maintaining, and developing a network with them.
  • T riage these new and non-standard opportunities to determine, if within appetite, hit ratio probability and make-up of cross-functional team (e,g. including yourself).
  • Perform end-to-end underwriting analysis on some of these new opportunities for proportional and non-proportional treaty business, including pricing and contracts review.
  • Analyze market environment and work closely with the Business Development and Underwriting teams to identify opportunities for niche segments that we do not access through our traditional core treaties.
  • Perform financial analytics and substantiation for the region, provide comprehensive and important business insight to the relevant stakeholders.
  • Undertake specific financial projects and ad hoc activities as required by the business.
  • Manage the entire process for the team's bifurcated portfolio internally and externally with brokers, and personally be accountable for ~2/3 of our bifurcated accounts. This will involve using your underwriting authority to evaluate and assess the Canadian exposures in these broad international portfolios in accordance with company guidelines and standards.
  • Provide underwriting support to Senior Client Underwriters for non-client facing activities.
  • Establish strong working relationship with internal key partners from the cross functional team, become a strong team member and key point of contact.
  • You will be expected to obtain basic underwriting authority.

About you

Flexibility and curiosity play a role in your ability to learn new skills quickly. Business Development, and a sales / commercial mindset are second nature to you.

  • University degree in Business, Finance, Mathematics, Insurance, Risk Management or Actuarial sciences.
  • 2-3 years of experience in the (re)insurance industry. i.e. basic understanding of the end-to-end reinsurance value chain.
  • Solid quantitative/analytical skills
  • Strong communicator, particularly with an aptitude for sales.
  • Strong commercial drive and ability to prioritize and apply sound commercial judgment.
  • Out-of-the-box thinker. Creative thinking capability and a problem-solving mindset.
  • Ability to work independently as well as to collaborate in a team environment.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset (sense of urgency, cost consciousness, personal risk taking, adaptable), committed to sustainable performance and continuous improvement.
  • Embraces the Swiss Re behaviors of simplification, speed of decision-making and accountability to bring them to life in all that we do.
  • Excellent organizational/project management skills, ability to manage peak period workloads (seasonality)
  • Languages: Fluency in English.

Nice to Haves

  • (Re)insurance broking or reinsurance buying experience.
  • Network within Canadian (re)insurance industry.
  • Good knowledge of corporate finance and accounting.
  • In the early stage of going through the actuarial exam process with a few exams completed will be a plus.
  • Languages: French
