Job Description - Volunteer - Outdoor Open Water Guard

Role: As an Outdoor Open Water Volunteer Guard with MNP Community & Sport Centre, you are responsible for ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants and guests in an outdoor waterfront environment. You will provide active safety supervision, prevention, emergency response, and legendary service while maintaining Lifesaving Society standards in an open water setting.


Reports to: Aquatic Shift Leader, Aquatic Operations Coordinator, and Aquatic Programs & Operations Manager

What You’ll Do


Safety & Waterfront Supervision



  • Actively supervises participants in an outdoor open water environment using effective scanning, positioning, and zone coverage techniques.

  • Monitor waterfront conditions including water depth, visibility, weather, temperature, currents, and shoreline hazards.

  • Provide emergency care, in-water rescue, and stabilization until Emergency Medical Services arrive.

  • Ensure safe access to and from the water using designated beach, dock, jetty, or pier entry and exit points.

  • Follow and uphold all policies and procedures outlined in the Aquatic Safety and Supervision Plan for waterfront operations.

  • Maintain the fitness level required to meet National Lifeguard Waterfront and Lifesaving Society standards.

  • Ensure participants are organized and prepared to evacuate during emergencies or changing environmental conditions.


Program Support & Participant Safety



  • Support safe delivery of waterfront and aquatic activities in a manner that is engaging, organized, and appropriate to participant needs.

  • Educate participants on safe open water practices, designated swim areas, and site-specific hazards.

  • Assist with planning and delivering waterfront special events and program days.


Open Water Volunteer Program Dates:



  • June 13th from 9am-11am @ Chestermere Lake

  • July 11th from 9am-11am @ Chestermere Lake

  • August 8th from 9am-11am @ Chestermere Lake


Waterfront Operations



  • Work in an outdoor open-water environment with water at least 1.5 meters in depth and shore access that individuals can use for aquatic activities.

  • Support safe entry to and exit from the water using a beach, dock, jetty, or pier, as applicable to the site.

  • Assist with waterfront set-ups, takedowns, equipment placement, and special event preparations as required.


What You’ll Need: 



  • National Lifeguard: Waterfront certification (required).

  • Bronze Cross certification (required prerequisite).

  • Alberta workplace approved Intermediate First Aid (required prerequisite).

  • Minimum of 15 years of age (required).

  • Holding current Intermediate First Aid is recommended for employment readiness.

  • Knowledge of waterfront safety practices, aquatic programs, and open water hazards.

  • Excellent customer engagement, communication, problem solving, judgment, and skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques in a waterfront environment.

  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team in an outdoor and dynamic environment.

  • Experience with open water supervision, waterfront programming, or competitive lifeguarding/lifesaving is considered an asset.
