Job Description - VP, Business Development

The Setup


We turn complex data into tools that change minds. You'll own everything that faces outward: revenue, relationships, and making sure clients don't regret choosing us. You'll partner with our Director of Ops who keeps the inside running. He makes sure we can actually deliver what you promise. Together, you'll help us become what we're building toward: a company whose logo is a mark of trust.


What You Actually Own


The Money Part Build and close on a a pipeline of foundations, NGOs, and research institutes who need their data to matter. You'll set expectations that match reality, not optimism. When you tell a client we'll deliver in April, the Operations team will nod instead of panic.


The Relationship Part Our clients stop calling us vendors after month one. By month three, they forget we're not on payroll. You'll make sure that happens every time, because you’ll put us into the “trusted advisor” position. No surprises, no BS, just consistent delivery of things that work and interactions that delight. 


The Story Part Keep our message clear. Write case studies that show real adoption, not just pretty pictures. Give talks and write articles that resonate with the entire ecosystem and help move it forward. Make sure when someone googles "data visualization for social impact," we're the obvious choice.


What Makes This Hard


You need to speak three languages fluently:




  1. Business - When a foundation asks about ROI, you have real answers




  2. Data - When a researcher starts talking about selection bias, you know why it matters




  3. Human - When someone's data could save lives but nobody's listening, you get why that hurts




Most sales leaders have the first one. You need all three.


After 12 Months, Success Looks Like:




  • Revenue targets hit or exceeded (obviously)




  • A pipeline you can explain in five minutes that actually closes




  • Clients who become evangelists, not just renewals




  • Our reputation as partner that can be trusted




You Might Be Right For This If:




  • You've closed complex $100K+ deals with people who care more about mission than margins




  • You can look at a correlation and know why it's probably BS




  • You understand the difference between normalization and aggregation




  • You write like you talk, and you talk like a human




  • You have the desire and the energy to build a world-class brand




  • You're tired of selling things that don't matter




You're Definitely Wrong For This If:




  • You think "data literacy" is something you can fake or outsource to a teammate




  • Your sales process involves wearing people down




  • You promise first, figure it out later




  • You've ever said "let's take this offline to align our synergies"




The Deal


We're a greenhouse. People grow faster here than makes sense. Half our team has been here a decade or more because the work matters and Mondays don't suck. You’ll join an experienced team of analysts, developers, designers, and leaders. 


We are generous with compensation and aim to have total comp in the 90th percentile. But we’re also very merit based which includes variable pay.
