Job Description - VP, Strategic Growth- Energy & Mining
We have partnered with an established Western Canadian Civil Construction and Industrial services organization to recruit a VP, Strategic Growth – Energy & Mining.
This is not a traditional business development role. Our client delivers complex projects across energy, oil and gas, mining and infrastructure, and they're looking for someone who has already done what this role requires elsewhere, grown a business, region, market or service line, and built a $50M–$100M project portfolio from relationships rather than tender lists.
If you have a network across Western Canadian energy, oil and gas and mining and you're ready to build something with real ownership behind it, this is worth a conversation.
This isn't a support role in the growth story, it's a lead role. You'll have direct reports, you'll report directly into the Senior Operations Executive Team, and you'll be in the room when strategy gets set, not briefed on it after the fact. This is a role to bring someone into the boardroom, and it comes with an excellent base salary and a strong total compensation package to match.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop and execute a strategic growth plan across energy, oil and gas and mining
Identify major capital projects, maintenance programs and long-term contracting opportunities
Build and manage a qualified portfolio of opportunities valued between $50M and $100M
Establish and strengthen senior-level relationships with asset owners, operators, mining companies, engineering firms, EPC contractors and other industry partners
Position the organization early in the project lifecycle, ahead of formal tender
Develop strategic account plans that drive repeat business and long-term client relationships
Evaluate opportunities based on strategic fit, profitability, probability of award, execution risk and available resources
Work closely with executive leadership, estimating, operations and project teams to convert opportunities into profitable work
Support major proposals, presentations, commercial negotiations and go/no-go decisions
Identify opportunities to enter new markets, expand service offerings and develop strategic or Indigenous partnerships
Monitor market activity, competitor positioning, upcoming projects and client capital programs
Report to leadership on opportunity pipeline, expected award timing and forecasted revenue
Travel throughout Western and Northern Canada as required
QUALIFICATIONS
Comfortable operating as a senior leader with direct reports, not just an individual contributor
Reports directly to the Senior Operations Executive, with a clear line of sight to executive decision making
10+ years in strategic growth, commercial leadership, major-project development or senior business development
5+ years direct experience in energy, oil and gas, mining, heavy civil construction or industrial services
A demonstrated record of growing a business, region, market or service line
Proven experience developing and converting project portfolios valued at $50M–$100M or more
An established network of senior-level relationships across Western Canadian energy, oil and gas and mining, with a track record of turning those relationships into qualified opportunities and repeat business
Experience with major projects in heavy civil construction, earthworks, pipelines, facility infrastructure, mine development, reclamation, water management or related industrial services
Strong knowledge of how major projects move from early planning through procurement, award and execution
Commercial knowledge of project economics, estimating, contract structures, risk and operational delivery
Experience working collaboratively with executive leadership, estimating, operations and project-delivery teams
Strong communication, negotiation, presentation and relationship-management skills
Degree or diploma in business, engineering, construction management or a related field preferred
