Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Water & Wastewater Operations Advisor plays a vital role on our Circuit Rider Team, providing expert support to First Nations communities across Alberta. This position is responsible for developing and helping implement critical operational documents, including Maintenance Management Plans (MMPs), Emergency Response Plans (ERPs), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for community water and wastewater treatment systems.
Working closely with plant operators, supervisors, and leadership, the Advisor supports the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of water and wastewater facilities. This role also involves participating in design committees and responding to drinking water advisories, ensuring that up-to-date system knowledge and risk considerations are integrated into operational planning.
Key Responsibilities:
Plan Development & Implementation
•Prepare comprehensive MMPs, ERPs, and SOPs tailored to the unique needs of each community and facility.
•Collaborate directly with water and wastewater operators and supervisors to roll out these plans, ensuring practical and sustainable adoption.
Advisory & Technical Support
•Serve as a trusted advisor to operators and supervisors, offering guidance on best practices for operations, maintenance, and regulatory compliance.
•Participate in and contribute to design committees, providing operational insights that inform infrastructure planning and upgrades.
Response to Advisories
•Engage with communities and operators during Drinking Water Advisories (DWAs) or other incidents, helping ensure appropriate actions are taken and documented.
Training & Capacity Building
•Provide on-the-job coaching and informal training to operators to build confidence and capacity in implementing operational and emergency procedures.
Documentation & Reporting
•Maintain accurate records of plans, implementation progress, and community engagements.
•Prepare clear reports and updates for internal leadership and external partners as required.
Qualifications & Experience
Education: Certification or diploma in Water and Wastewater Treatment, Environmental Technology, Civil/Environmental Engineering Technology, or a related field.
Experience:
•Minimum of 5 years of experience in the operation, maintenance, or management of water and wastewater treatment systems.
•Prior experience developing operational plans or standard procedures is strongly preferred.
•Experience working with or supporting First Nations communities is an asset.
Certifications:
Skills & Attributes:
•In-depth understanding of water and wastewater treatment processes, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
•Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and collaborate effectively with plant operators, community leadership, and regulatory partners.
•Strong written and verbal communication skills for developing clear, practical documents and providing supportive guidance.
•Commitment to cultural sensitivity, respect for community autonomy, and working within the context of reconciliation.
•Self-motivated with excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects across diverse communities.
Other Requirements:
•Must be willing and able to travel regularly to First Nations communities throughout Alberta, often to remote locations.
•Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a strong driving record.
