Reporting directly to the BN Shelter Home Manager, The Wellness Worker is responsible for supporting the daily operations of the shelter home environment by preparing nutritious meals, maintaining a clean and safe facility, and providing transportation support as needed. This role contributes to creating a welcoming, respectful, and supportive environment for residents and staff.
The Wellness Worker ensures that food preparation, housekeeping, sanitation, and transportation activities meet organizational policies as well as health and safety standards. The ideal candidate is organized, dependable, culturally sensitive, and able to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
Skills & Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience in food preparation, cooking, housekeeping, custodial work, or related environments preferred.
Experience working in residential, community, or shelter settings is considered an asset.
Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and safe cleaning practices.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills.
Physical ability to perform housekeeping tasks, including lifting, bending, standing, and repetitive movement.
Cultural awareness and sensitivity when working with diverse populations.
Valid Food Handler Certification or willingness to obtain.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Food Preparation & Kitchen Operations:
Prepare nutritious daily meals and snacks while considering dietary restrictions, allergies, and cultural preferences.
Ensure proper food handling, storage, sanitation, and kitchen safety practices are followed.
Maintain cleanliness of kitchen areas, appliances, dishes, and food preparation equipment.
Monitor food inventory and assist with grocery shopping and supply purchasing as required.
Follow all workplace health and safety procedures related to food preparation and kitchen operations.
Cleaning & Housekeeping:
Perform regular cleaning and housekeeping duties throughout the facility, including common areas, kitchens, bathrooms, offices, and resident spaces.
Complete laundry duties, including washing bedding, towels, and other facility linens.
Safely use cleaning products and equipment in accordance with safety guidelines and manufacturer instructions.
Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming environment for residents and staff.
Transportation & Supplies:
Safely operate a company or organizational vehicle for errands, appointments, grocery shopping, and supply pickups.
Conduct routine vehicle safety checks and maintain vehicle cleanliness.
Maintain accurate records related to transportation activities and supply purchases.
Assist with coordinating and planning supply and grocery pickup schedules.
Conditions of Employment:
Valid First Aid/CPR certificate
Provide clear Vulnerable Sector check
Valid Class G Ontario Driver’s license with clean drivers abstract
