The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has openings for a seasonal casual call-in Winter Control in the Public Works division.

Job description

Winter Control (seasonal) are responsible for operating snow ploughs to remove snow from streets, highways, etc.

Essential responsibilities

• Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies


• Winter control, operating snow ploughs or trucks fitted with plough blades to remove snow from streets, highways, parking lots and similar areas


• Clean and maintain streets, roads and public grounds of the municipality and other areas, working as a member of a crew


• Assist Equipment Operators to secure attachments to equipment or trucks


• Complete any reports required

Essential qualifications

• Possess a Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent education (i.e. GED certificate)


• Personal or agricultural experience working with other large and/or heavy equipment


• Basic computer skills


• Position requires the candidate to be on a 24-hour standby basis, to carry a pager, and to be able to respond within one hour to emergencies


• Experience operating a 5 cubic yard loader, combination snow plough and spreader unit

Other qualifications

• Experience in road maintenance operations an asset


• Previous experience using other heavy equipment an asset


• Experienced working with winter sand/salt an asset


• General truck driving experience an asset

Certifications, memberships, licenses

• Valid DZ License required


• Heavy Equipment Operator training and/or truck driving courses an asset


• Standard First Aid/CPR and asset


• Health & Safety training an asset

Work environment/hours of work

• This position works outdoors


• This position works on call hours

Driver’s licence/vehicle requirements

Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class DZ (or higher) Ontario driver’s licence; a driver’s abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. An acceptable driver’s abstract will: be an original document and current (within the previous thirty (30) days); have no more than four (4) demerit points; have no more than two (2) convictions for the same offence; have no criminal code convictions; have no ‘non-medical or administrative’ license suspension in the preceding three (3) years.

Essential physical and/or safety requirements

• Work outside in all weather conditions and in an unsanitary environment; able to work in extreme cold weather conditions


• Able to be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, and vibration able to work where noise levels are loud able to bend, reach and lift various weights on a regular basis (22.73 kg or 50 pounds)


• Able to load and unload tools and materials


• Due to the responsibilities of this position, the candidate must be physically fit and reliable


• Bending: frequent stooping, twisting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, crawling (tree removal, sign repairs, raking)


• Walking: frequent walking on level surface, rough surface (worksites rough and unlevel)


• Sitting: frequent vehicle seat (equipment operation, winter control, some training needed)


• Reaching: frequent reaching below shoulder, forward, handling (up to 22.73 kgs or 50 lbs) (tree removal, sign repairs, shovelling, raking)


• Lifting: frequent lifting floor to waist, waist to shoulder (up to 22.73 kgs or 50 lbs) (daily tasks (various) including tree removal, sing repairs, shoveling, raking)


• Standing: frequent outside (traffic control, etc.)


• Hands: frequent fine finger dexterity (movement), gripping, pinching (equipment, computers)


• Foot action: frequent 1 foot action (driving/operating vehicles)        

Benefits

This seasonal casual call-in position is paid $247.20 per week standby pay with an hourly wage of $24.79 for on-call hours and will receive vacation and statutory benefits in accordance with Employment Standards Act.
