Job Description - Youth Leadership Mentor - Overnight Camps

About Us:
BGC Weston-Mount Dennis & Lawrence Heights Clubs serve children and youth in the Lawrence Heights/Weston-Mount Dennis and surrounding communities. We provide social, physical, educational, creative, seasonal, and community support programs.



Program Description:
Youth Leadership Mentors will lead two, two-week leadership programs designed to empower youth with valuable leadership skills and practical outdoor knowledge. This role involves teaching leadership concepts, fostering resilience, and preparing youth for an overnight camp experience.




Program Details: During the first week of each session, Youth Leadership Mentors will teach leadership skills using BGC Canada's R2 Resilience Approach and This Way Onward program. These lessons will be integrated into the Leaders In Training program. In addition to leadership training, youth will gain basic overnight camping skills such as:



  • Putting up a tent

  • Tying proper knots

  • Cooking outdoors

  • Learning responsibility (e.g., chores)

  • Building and maintaining a fire


During the second week of each session, youth will attend overnight camp (Monday to Friday) at Camp Awenda, where Youth Leadership Mentors will actively participate in ensuring the program is engaging, organized, and impactful.


Work Schedule:



  • June 30 – July 4: Leadership Camp Week

  • July 7 – July 11: Overnight Camp at Camp Awenda

  • July 14 – July 18: Preparation for the next group of youth

  • July 21 – July 25: Leadership Camp Week

  • July 28 – August 1: Overnight Camp at Camp Awenda


Responsibilities:



  • Plan, organize, and facilitate engaging leadership development workshops for youth.

  • Deliver lessons using BGC Canada's R2 Resilience Approach and This Way Onward curriculum.

  • Teach practical outdoor skills such as tent setup, fire-building, and outdoor cooking.

  • Work collaboratively with Camp Howland Coordinators to develop comprehensive lesson plans for overnight camp.

  • Ensure the safety, well-being, and engagement of all youth participants throughout the program.

  • Foster a positive and inclusive environment where youth feel encouraged to develop leadership skills.

  • Support youth in taking on responsibilities, promoting accountability and teamwork.

  • Address conflict and behavior challenges using positive guidance techniques.

  • Participate fully in overnight camp activities, ensuring youth remain safe and engaged throughout the experience.

  • Assist in setting up, maintaining, and organizing camping equipment and supplies.


Qualifications:



  • Experience working in an overnight camp setting (mandatory).

  • Must meet all "Canada Summer Jobs" requirements, including:

    • Be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment.

    • Be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*.

    • Be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
      *International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.



  • Experience facilitating youth leadership programs or working directly with youth in a mentorship role.

  • Strong understanding of leadership principles and youth engagement strategies.

  • Experience in teaching outdoor skills such as tent setup, knot-tying, campfire safety, and cooking.

  • Ability to effectively manage group dynamics, resolve conflicts, and foster positive group interactions.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with youth, parents, and staff.

  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (mandatory).

  • Police Reference Check completed within the last 6 months (mandatory prior to start date).

  • HIGH FIVE: Principles of Healthy Child Development training (asset).


Contract Period: June 23, 2025 – August 1, 2025


Must attend mandatory training from June 23 to June 27


Hours: Full-time hours, including overnight camp commitments.
