About the Role

As a Real Estate Accountant in the Finance Function, your main focus will be to assume responsibility for providing comprehensive support to the finance accounting team. This entails overseeing the general ledger and producing detailed financial reports pertaining to real estate operations.

This hybrid role reports into our Accounting Manager and is based out of the Toronto Support Office.

A Day in the Life

Working at H&M means no two days are ever the same, but a typical day will include the following responsibilities*

  • Review and analyze lease agreements to extract key financial data and terms
  • Review and process monthly rent payments
  • Calculate percent rent and process payments
  • Review landlord correspondence and research billing disputes
  • Review landlord prepared estoppels
  • Interact with internal leasing department, landlords, and legal counsel
  • Review oversight of open real estate issues and work with Landlord to resolve open balances
  • Maintain log of open landlord invoices 
  • Prepare and report monthly sales report and send to Landlord
  • Work on month end entries and postings
  • Review/Calculate CAM, Tax, Insurance, HVAC Year End True-Ups
  • Maintain lease databases and documentation, ensuring data integrity and compliance with internal controls and IFRS leasing regulations
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of lease accounting processes
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements related to lease transactions
  • Responsible for supporting variance analysis of actuals to budgets
  • Review of year end landlord reconciliations
  • Annual reporting to parent company of leases and real estate expenses
  • Other ad hoc projects and assignments as they become necessary

Qualifications



Who You Are:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Accounting preferred
  • 3 years real estate accounting or lease administration experience. Retail experience is a plus
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, time sensitive environment
  • Well versed accounting concepts and IFRS leasing regulation
  • Strong organizational skill
  • Strong ability to interpret lease language and understand legal term
  • Strong analytical skills and detail oriented
  • Experience working with financial system programs (e.g., SAP) is desirable
  • Experience with lease accounting software is a plus
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Expert in Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to follow-up with all levels of employees
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines effectively
