Job Description - Accessibility Commissioner

L'Association Étudiante de l'Université de McGill est présentement en période d'embauches. Avec plus de 20,000 membres, l'AÉUM a pour rôle de représenter les étudiants et de leur offrir des services depuis 1908.

The Student's Society of McGill University (SSMU) is currently hiring. With over 20,000 members, SSMU's role is to represent students and to offer services since 1908.

Responsibilities 

  • Chair the Accessibility Committee;

  • Advocate for the recommendations of the Special Researcher (Academic Accessibility & Accommodations);

  • Review and maintain accessible design standards for online content;

  • Write research reports and engaging in university advocacy with the Vice-President (University Affairs) to achieve goals set out in the Accessibility Policy, 

  • Work closely with the President to identify barriers to democratic participation,

  • Provide consultation to student groups, staff, and executives on issues of accessibility, 

  • Interpret, amend and oversee the SSMU Accessibility Policy;

  • Design and implement a reporting mechanism under the Accessibility Policy for accessibility complaints, similar to the Equity Complaints process;

  • Review governing documents, statements, and other major communications to ensure the use of accessible language; 

  • Develop resources to aid student groups in planning more accessible activities, 

  • Train and advise SSMU student groups and staff on accessibility.

Other Responsibilities and Functions 

To undertake other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Vice-President (Student Life).

Supervision Required

The Accessibility Commissioner receives general direction from the Vice-President (Student Life). The Accessibility Commissioner gives general direction to the Accessibility Committee.

Working Conditions

High-pressure work environment from both an operational and political perspective. Duties are critical to student activism with a high consequence of error. 

Equipment used: Computer, Google environment (Gmail, Docs, Drive, etc.).

  2. Ability to work effectively under pressure;

  3. Initiative and results driven;

  4. Diligence and impartiality in execution of duties;

  5. Organized with attention to detail;

  6. Ability to make fair and equitable decisions under pressure;

  7. Able to work independently and in a team environment;

  8. Knowledge of SSMU and McGill governance structures is an asset;

  9. Strong communication skills both in English and French an asset.

  • Paid position: $16.28 per hour;
  • Contract dates: Mid-June May 31, 2024
  • Hours: an average of 8-12 hours per week; 150 hours total
  • Work performed across McGill’s campus, remotely, and in the SSMU office;
  • Deadline to apply: July 28, 2023
