Core Responsibilities

The Managing Director is responsible for leading, coordinating and enabling the pursuit of the College’s vision—continually improving student outcomes in the performing arts.

There will be five key components to the job.

  1. Overall responsibility for CCPA, and the reporting link to the Board of Governors of the parent organization, Canadian Heritage Arts Society (CHAS).
  2. Manage a special collaborative reporting relationship with the Director of Education who retains control of the artistic direction, educational programs, student conduct and standards to the highest national level to fulfil the College’s vision while reporting on core issues to the Managing Director.
  3. Act as the business manager providing oversight, specializing in strategic planning, management of risk, I.T., human resources, business development, donor relations and fundraising.
  4. Be a consensus building manager who can build a culture of collaboration with staff, faculty, students and other important supporters of the college.
  5. The Board’s charter also includes a community outreach mandate that requires support.

Primary Duties

Leadership

  • Develops a strategic plan with the Board of Governors
  • Develops plans, budgets, policies to implement the strategic plan
  • Collaborates with the Director of Education, staff, faculty, students, and other important community members
  • Under delegated authority from the Board, collaborates with staff on the community outreach direction
  • Supports the Director of Education’s efforts to attract and recruit high caliber performing arts faculty and students within the overall budgetary framework
  • Communicates and leads the strategic vision and direction with staff, students and the public
  • Demonstrates a high level of emotional intelligence
  • Brings recognized successful interpersonal & political skills in building partnerships at local, provincial, and national levels
  • Identifies, assesses and informs the Board of Governors of internal and external risks and issues affecting the organization
  • Acts as professional advisor to the Board of Governors on all aspects of CCPA including community relations activities
  • Acts as spokesperson for CCPA
  • Brings community controversial issues to the Board of Governors after consulting with the Chair, if deemed necessary

Management

  • Is a collaborative, consensus building leader, who listens and welcomes staff and faculty feedback, but remains the tactical decision-maker who creates and implements plans to continually improve student outcomes in the performing arts
  • Oversees the day-to-day operation of the Society and College and ensures the operation of CCPA meets the expectations of students, Board, licensing agencies and funders
  • Ensures the community outreach activities of CHAS reflect the broader community needs and serve under-represented groups
  • In partnership with the Director of Education: provides reports to the Board on educational recruitment and outcomes, artistic directions, and events; identifies risks and provides mitigation strategies on educational outcomes
  • Identifies and evaluates the risks to CCPA (students, staff, programs, volunteers) as well as property, finances, goodwill and image, and implements measures to control these risks
  • Develops a plan for Board consideration on business development, fund raising, IT, human resources and donor relations
  • Ensures professional appearance and effective operation and maintenance of the CCPA campus and brings forward recommendations on facilities

Human Resources

  • In collaboration with the Director of Education, determines CCPA staffing requirements
  • Ensures a first-class recruitment and retention strategy is in place
  • Oversees the implementation of CCPA human resources policies and practices
  • Establishes a positive, healthy and safe work and learning environment for staff and students by developing a plan which includes the mental health and wellbeing of all
  • Oversees the discipline of staff and is the final arbiter of releases from employment
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Education to ensure student learning is delivered in accordance with course outlines and the requirements of the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills

Financial Planning

  • Provides financial leadership and is accountable for management of the college’s $2M annual budget (approx.)
  • Works with staff and presents to the Board an annual, comprehensive budget for approval, as well as quarterly tracking reports
  • Administers funds of CCPA according to the budget approved by the Board and monitors monthly cash flow ensuring compliance with all applicable financial legislation
  • Drives and participates in grant writing and development initiatives
  • Works with the Board and staff in the development of fundraising plans and leads fundraising activities as required
  • Approves expenditures within the authority delegated by the Board
  • Ensures sound bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed Development and Recruitment
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Education on development and maintenance of strategies for student recruitment
  • Offers a strong knowledge of fund development methods and standards of practice.
  • Ensures up to date use of fundraising management database
  • Plans and participates in the creation, execution, evaluation and follow-up of all fundraising initiatives and donor activities
  • Ensures a strong rate of renewal with current donors, funders and sponsors
  • Works with the Board’s Development Committee and staff to steward donors and sponsors and build CCPA’s portfolio of qualified prospects
  • Conducts appropriate research and writes government, corporate, and foundation, funding applications and proposals in collaboration with a Grant Writer
  • Liaise with key government, corporate, and foundation stakeholders as needed

Community Relations

  • Work with Communications staff to develop messaging and collateral to promote the college's programming and brand
  • Communicate with CCPA stakeholders to keep them informed of the work of CCPA
  • Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with educational institutions, arts organizations, community groups, funders, politicians and all other organizations to help achieve the goals of CCPA
  • Network with decision-makers and coordinates academic and financial plans and proposals in support of existing and new agreements

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience of management within or of a complex organization preferably in the arts and/or education
  • Relevant contacts across Canada which aid in maintaining and/or increasing the standards and profile of CCPA
  • Five years of working in the non-profit sector would be helpful, and working with a Board of Directors important Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strategic I.T. experience
  • Demonstrable human resource skills
  • Experience in grant writing, negotiation and contract management
  • Demonstrable abilities in project management
  • Knowledge and understanding of the private post-secondary sector, preferably in B.C., is useful, but not necessary
  • Knowledge of financial management
  • Track record of excellent communication and decision-making
  • Demonstrable ability to work well with boards, students, staff and faculty
  • Appreciation of Canadian theatre, television and film industries
