Position Description

Reporting to the Events & Program Manager, the Sous Chef will need to be creative and passionate at cooking and understand the vision of KCA Youth and Family Wellness Camp. The Sous Chef will be responsible for assisting with the daily operations of the kitchen, ensuring that all meals are prepared and presented according to Kenora Chiefs Advisory’s high standards, and with the clean-up that follows. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as a passion for creating delicious food, gardening, and some facilitation.

Department:                KCA Youth and Family Wellness Camp
Term:                              Full Time/Permanent

Salary:                            $60,000 Per Annum

Location:                       371 Strecker Road, Kenora, Ontario, P9N 4N8

Reports to:                    Events & Program Manager, KCA Youth & Family Wellness Camp
Responsibilities

Ø  Works collaboratively with KCA Youth & Family Wellness Camp Director, Managers, Coordinators and other KCA Staff on projects, events, and programs

Ø  Supports nutritional programming that can take place at the KCA Youth & Family Wellness Camp, as well as community nutrition initiatives

Ø  Assist with the daily operations of the kitchen, including food preparation, presentation, ordering, and sanitation

Ø  Ensure that all dishes are prepared according to the menu and health standards

Ø  Coordinate with front-of-house staff to ensure guest satisfaction

Ø  Provide training assistant to all kitchen staff on proper cooking techniques and food safety regulations

Ø  Assist in monitoring kitchen inventory and ordering supplies

Ø  Work with Head Chef & Nutritional Coordinator to develop new menu items and specials based on seasonal ingredients

Ø  Ensure that all kitchen equipment is in good working order

Ø  Facilitate programming that involves healthy eating, cooking, and harvesting

Ø  Assist in the planning and preparation of annual seasonal ceremonies

Ø  Assist in all areas of the kitchen operations

Ø  Assist in kitchen with light duties that may be assigned as needed i.e. housekeeping in kitchen, clean dishes

Ø  Assist in all areas of maintaining the community garden, including but not limited to planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting

Ø  Assist with seasonal staff during high volume season to support in the kitchen operations

Ø  Willing to work flex hours as needed for KCA Youth & Family Wellness Camp

Ø  Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Ø  Kitchen preparation experience

Ø  Demonstrated maturity; strong advocate of First Nation people

Ø  Must have demonstrated ability to work with First Nations as well as health and social service agencies

Ø  Must demonstrate the ability to respond calmly and appropriately in emotional situations

Ø  Model behavior in a manner that serves as an example of positive cultural values, attitudes, beliefs, and actions

Ø  Ability to work independently and in a team setting

Ø  Knowledge of the Anishinaabe culture and language and experience in working in First Nation communities

Position Requirements:

Ø  Valid driver’s license and vehicle

Ø  Willing to work irregular hours, evenings and weekends as required

Ø  Willing to travel (when required) to all Treaty #3 First Nation communities

Ø  Current satisfactory criminal reference check with vulnerable sector search

Ø  Certificate in Food Handlers

Ø  Standard First Aid & CPR with AED is an asset

Ø  Understanding of the Anishinaabe language (Ojibway) is an asset
