The Ministry of Forests (FOR) delivers policy and programs that provide economic, cultural, environmental, and social benefits for all British Columbians. Digital technology is transforming how we deliver our programs and services. It is a necessary driver for transparency and improved service delivery within FOR.

The Associate Deputy Ministers Office (ADMO) handles the delivery of integrated management services to British Columbians. The ADMO represents the ministry on government initiatives to improve services and the delivery of ministry programs. This includes working with other ministries and natural resource agencies to improve permitting while supporting sustainable economic development and maintaining high environmental protection.

The Senior Data Scientist functions as a senior expert in the Ministry and as an Enterprise-wide Team Lead. Several Ministry-wide initiatives are major in terms of scope, government priorities and have unique specialized data requirements. This position will support the achievement of ministry goals and objectives through the development and leadership of key data strategies and initiatives.

The ADMO is looking for an analytical and self-directed person who works fast, has experience with high profile projects, and has experience and understanding of the natural resource sector data. The successful candidate must have exceptional communication skills, the ability to manage a diverse portfolio of responsibilities, and have a deft hand in dealing with competing interests. Job Requirements: Degree in a related field

  • and 4 years of combined experience
  • in the areas listed below; OR Diploma in a related field
  • and 5 years of combined experience
  • in the areas listed below; OR Certification from a recognized institution in a related field and 6 years of combined experience
  • in the areas listed below; OR 7 years of combined experience
  • in the areas listed below.
  • Related Education fields may include: Data Science, Computer Science, GIS, statistics, mathematics, or other relevant specialty degrees as designated by program requirements.
  • Combined experience must include experience in each of these 6 areas: Experience identifying complex business problems through applying an evolving range of data science tools and techniques and machine learning to solve complex business problems.

Experience advising senior decision-makers on strategic and operational business enhancements based on findings of data science projects. Experience using machine learning, clustering and classification techniques to analyze diverse sources of data. Experience in creating data structures, query optimization and database view development to support report generation and data analytics.

Experience designing/developing reports and generating data visualizations using standard business intelligence tools such as PowerBI. Experience in modern data architecture practices and data warehousing. Preference may be given to applicants who have one or more of the following: Experience leading/coaching multi-disciplinary senior-level professionals in the development and implementation of data science projects.

Experience using scientific methods through experimental design, exploratory data analysis and hypothesis testing. Experience designing, implementing and optimizing repeatable statistical and predictive models and algorithms at scale. Experience determining appropriate use of various problem structuring methods and statistical methods for sampling, distribution assessment, bias and error.

Experience creating and delivering executive-level presentations for the purpose of decision making. Experience working directly with Natural Resource Sector data. Willingness and ability to learn new technologies on the job.
