Job Description - INTERN EDUCATION COORDINATOR

INTERN EDUCATION COORDINATOR Location Savona, BC :

Position Summary Job Type: Full-time, temporary Start Date: Immediately End Date: February 14, 2024 Hours of Work: Monday - Friday Reporting to: Manager, Social Development Department: Social Development The Education Coordinator administers on and off reserve education programs for Skeetchestn members. This includes K-12, post secondary, trades and technology students, adult education, Local Education Agreement (LEA) and nominal roll. Maintains ongoing relationships with agencies and partners to ensure that Skeetchestn membership receives ongoing support for education.

Key Responsibilities

Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Skeetchestn Indian Band policies, practices, and procedures as directed by the Manager, Social Development. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to members, clients, employees, and general matters of SIB. Education Program Coordination
  • Coordinates on and reserve Education programs including K-12, post-secondary, and adult training and education.
  • Conducts needs assessments to ensure education programs are meeting community needs.
  • Communicates with the community to build awareness of various education and training programs.
  • Submits Nominal Roll to ISC for students in K-12 to provide funding to schools.
  • Administers Joint Verification Agreements with School Districts 73 and 74.
  • Liaises with schools in School Districts 73 and 74 to support students as needed.
  • Communicates with parents and teachers and attends parent-teacher meetings as requested.
  • Monitors attendance and progress for K-12 and post-secondary students to ensure they are attending school and accomplishing their goals.
  • Communicates new support initiatives to current students.
  • Liaises regularly with Skeetchestn Community School and works with the high school teacher to support students exploring post-secondary education.
  • Assists with organizing graduation and recognition events in the community.
  • Supports high school students to apply for post-secondary admission.
  • Organizes campus tours for prospective post-secondary students. Partners with other First Nations to organize tours.
  • Submits annual proposals to ISC for students attending post-secondary.
  • Processes living allowances for eligible post-secondary students.
  • Administers budget for tuition, books, materials and supplies according to policy.
  • Researches available funding and submits proposals/grant applications to various funders.
  • Works with other First Nation communities on joint funding opportunities (i.e. sustainable ranching program, trades programs etc.)
  • Coordinates adult education and training programs.
  • Serves as Skeetchestn's representative on the Joint Implementation Committee meetings (JIC) and sits on various committees where education and training is discussed.
Administration
  • Submits reports to funders (ISC, CALP, etc.) as required.
  • Administers the Education program budget according to policy.
  • Provides regular updates and reports to the Manager, Social Development. Prepares activity reports, and program impact updates as requested.
  • Develops and maintains clear, accurate and orderly program files and records.
Other related duties as required. Skeetchestn Indian Band reserves the right to make reasonable changes to your job responsibilities from time to time to accommodate its business needs.

Qualifications

Training, Education, Experience
  • Grade 12 and post-secondary certificate or other training related to Education Support, Career Development Planning or related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working in the education support field preferably within a First Nation community.
  • Experience researching and writing grant proposals.
  • Current Class 5 BC Driver's Licence.
  • Satisfactory criminal records check (vulnerable sector).
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Enjoys working with children, youth and adults and supporting their education goals.
  • Working knowledge of provincial education for K-12 and Indigenous education programs and support.
  • Knowledge of college, university and trades programming/education.
  • Strong writing skills including grant writing and reporting.
  • Experience working with funding providers.
  • Ability to build positive relationships built on trust.
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong cultural sensitivity and understanding. Able to demonstrate respect and caring without judgement.
  • Knowledge of the history of Indigenous people in Canada and the impact of historical trauma.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, community members and co-workers.
  • Intermediate computer skills including MS Office.
  • Genuine respect for Skeetchestn Indian Band culture and protocols.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a variety of setting including office, schools and other community settings. Some travel outside the community for campus tours, attending meetings or training is required.
