Job Description - Horticulture Therapy Intern

Horticultural Therapy Internship – Therapeutic Garden Lead


Stedman Community Hospice is seeking a caring and compassionate temporary part-time Horticultural Therapy Intern to join our team. Our 10-bed residence gives people who are living with a palliative diagnosis the opportunity to live with dignity and comfort in a place that feels like home. The successful candidate will demonstrate a positive attitude and willingness to learn. The Horticultural Therapy Intern will foster an environment that is safe and homelike in keeping with the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre/Stedman Community Hospice.


DESCRIPTION:


The Horticultural Therapy Intern will complete all garden maintenance within the Stedman Therapeutic Garden, coordinating volunteers and students to complete required horticultural tasks. This includes organizing and/or ordering necessary supplies within a defined budget and completing all associated administrative and budget reports. The successful candidate will work as part of the interdisciplinary care team to provide exemplary care to all persons who live, visit and work on the St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre/Stedman Community Hospice campus of care.


This is a part-time (22.5 hours per week) contract position for the duration of 6 months. The Horticultural Therapy Intern will be supervised by a Registered Horticultural Therapist and as such, all documented internship hours will count towards professional registration with the Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Diploma or degree in horticulture, or related discipline, from a recognized institution.
  • Education in Horticultural Therapy, from a recognized institution or Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association (CHTA) approved program.
  • Experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, particularly working with vulnerable population in long-term care or hospice setting.


KEY SUCCESS CRITERIA:

  • Knowledge of horticultural procedures and appropriate seasonal horticultural tasks.
  • Knowledge of horticultural supplies, equipment and/or services.
  • Ability to physically accomplish all outdoor year-round horticultural tasks (must be able to lift 50lbs) and be prepared to work in all types of weather conditions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population of people.
  • Ability to make procedural decisions and judgements on sensitive, confidential issues.
  • Ability to complete horticultural tasks, including provision of HT programming plant materials, within a defined budget.
  • Information research, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to create, compose and edit written materials and communication.
  • Ability to supervise and train assigned volunteers, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments for a diverse group of people.
