Job Description - Intern, Manufacturing Engineering

Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS-related work, Seaspan Shipyards is leading the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians. The Intern, Ship Construction and Manufacturing, will be responsible for supporting Naval Architects and Mechanical Engineers in the successful completion of engineering tasks. This is a unique opportunity that will provide you with exposure to ship construction, plasma cutting, fitting and welding, fabrication, and sub-assembly from the design and concept preparation phases through to production engineering and the construction of the vessels. What You'll Do
  • Supports ship construction and manufacturing across two ships.
  • Supports the manufacturing processes in plasma cutting, fitting and welding, fabrication and sub assembly.
  • Performs time studies, and data collection to confirm manufacturing norms.
  • Calculates the workspace requirements and design strategies to utilize the workspace more effectively.
  • Creates standard operating procedures (SOP) and maintain manufacturing instructions used by the workforce.
  • Identifies waste in the manufacturing processes using lean methodologies.
  • Works directly on production line with the front line workers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
What You'll Bring
  • Enrollment in 3rd or 4th year Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering Technology degree program.
  • Dedication to proactive continuous improvement with an open demeanor to change.
  • Excellent problem solving & communication skills (written & spoken).
  • Ability to work cross functionally as part of a team with minimal direction.
  • Familiar with lean six sigma methodologies and concepts.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build relationship with trade workers and managers.
  • Persistency and perseverance..
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Must possess excellent presentation, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • PC proficiency required. Solid understanding of basic Microsoft Office 2010 software suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
