ROLE


The Clinical Extern role is part of the Ontario Ministry of Health Enhanced Extern Program, designed to provide students in recognized health programs with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a hospital setting. Clinical Externs work as unregulated care providers (UCPs) under the supervision and delegation of regulated health professionals as outlined below. This role is a transitional opportunity that supports patient care while helping students build confidence, clinical skills, and interprofessional collaboration experience.


Externs will be assigned a “home department” and may float between departments and sites to broaden their clinical exposure. HPHA sites include:



  • Clinton Public Hospital

  • Seaforth Community Hospital

  • St. Marys Memorial Hospital

  • Stratford General Hospital


Proof of enrolment in an eligible program is required.


 


REQUIRED EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION(S)



  • Students enrolled in recognized programs:

    • Nursing students (RN: 2nd–4th year; RPN: final year)

    • Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy students (2nd or 3rd year)

    • Respiratory Therapy students (2nd or 3rd year)

    • Paramedic students (PCP: 2nd year; ACP: any year)

    • Medical students (any year) or recent graduates awaiting residency

    • Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) who have initiated registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), received a CNO letter of direction, and meet one of the following criteria:

      • Enrolled in any year of a BScN-IEN or PN-IEN program

      • Completing a micro-credential plan

      • Have completed their educational requirements and are awaiting their exam







  • Proof of enrolment in an eligible program is required

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required

  • Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training or willingness to obtain upon hire

  • A valid drivers license and reliable means of transportation


 


REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE(S)



  • A minimum of one clinical placement with strong attendance record

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment

  • Understanding of infection prevention and control practices

  • Developing clinical skills and judgement

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of an inter-professional team

  • Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality


 


DESIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE(S) & EDUCATION



  • Gentle Persuasive Approach Training an asset

  • Previous healthcare experience an asset
