Job Description - 2026 Summer Law Student, Alberta Lawyers Indemnity Association

As a first or second-year law student, spending a summer working at Alberta Lawyers Indemnity Association (“ALIA”) is an exciting way for you to kickstart your career and gain valuable insight into what it takes to be successful in practice.

The Law Society of Alberta (the “Law Society”) regulates the legal profession in the public interest and is required by provincial statute to provide Alberta lawyers with an indemnity program. ALIA, a subsidiary of the Law Society, provides the mandatory indemnity program, which includes defending, repairing, and resolving professional liability claims, as well as dealing with misappropriation claims. Claims are managed by an internal claims team (claims counsel), who may also utilize external defence counsel where required.

By working as a student with ALIA, you will gain a unique perspective into the legal profession that is different from any other experience in a firm environment. Not only will you further develop your legal knowledge by providing support to lawyers on staff through legal research, writing and assistance, but you will also gain vital insight into practice risks that lawyers face daily and practical steps that can be taken to manage and avoid those risks. Your opportunities will include conducting research on claim files and presenting your recommendations to the claims team, as well as assisting ALIA leadership on ALIA projects.

Throughout the course of the summer and reporting to ALIA’s General Counsel and Senior Manager, Risk, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Attend orientation sessions to familiarize yourself with all areas of ALIA.

  • Work alongside the leadership of ALIA, including the General Counsel and Senior Manager, Risk, on projects.

  • Observe Justice and Applications Judges at the Court of King’s Bench if publicly accessible, gaining valuable knowledge about court decorum, filing processes and civil procedure.

  • Receive regular feedback from your supervisor and participate in a formal performance review at the end of your term, learning key areas of strength and development.

Summer students should be ready to commit to working full-time in our Calgary office from May to August 2026.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide support to ALIA leadership, claims professionals, and staff.

  • Conduct legal research and present recommendations to the claims team to make informed decisions on claims.

  • Write legal memorandums on client matters.

  • Assist with governance matters and internal projects.

  • Work on other matters as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful completion of the first or second year in law school.

  • Well-developed research and writing skills.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Excellent team player.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 Suite.

All inquiries and applications will be handled with the highest level of confidentiality. Interested students should apply by Friday, Feb. 27, 2026, by visiting www.lawsociety.ab.ca/careers. Please include:

  • A copy of a current resume, and a cover letter outlining your interest.

  • An attachment of your undergraduate and law school transcripts.

  • A writing sample (maximum 5 pages).

This position is also eligible for the Indigenous Summer Student Program. Applicants under this program can indicate their involvement during the application process.

Applicants selected for an interview will be contacted by Friday, March 13, 2026. ALIA thanks all applicants, however only selected candidates will be contacted. The successful candidate will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement and provide a current criminal record check prior to confirmation of employment.
