Job Description - Advocacy & Policy Associate (Municipal, Provincial & Federal Affairs)

Job Title: Advocacy & Policy Associate(Municipal, Provincial & Federal Affairs)


Reports to: Manager, Advocacy and Research


Department: Advocacy and Research


Duration/Term Length: Up to two (2) academic semesters: subject to semester-by-semester renewal


Compensation: $18/Hour 


Work Hours: Approximately 15 hours per week within normally scheduled operating hours, in addition to occasional evening/weekend meetings and events. Hours may vary depending on the time of the semester.


Location: Hybrid (remote and in-person), with travel to campus and external meetings as required.





Overview


Reporting to the Manager, Advocacy and Research, the Advocacy & Policy Associate(Municipal, Provincial & Federal Affairs) supports CCSAI’s government relations and student representation efforts across municipal, provincial, and federal levels.


The role monitors public policy, prepares briefing materials, and supports engagement with elected officials, public servants, and institutional leadership. The position helps ensure student concerns and lived experiences are communicated to decision-makers and that students are informed about policy developments affecting their education, affordability, and wellbeing.


The position participates in meetings, consultations, and advocacy initiatives and supports the development of positions, submissions, and outreach activities.



Duties and Responsibilities





Policy Research & Analysis




  • Monitors municipal, provincial, and federal policy developments affecting post-secondary students;


  • Conducts environmental scans and background research on housing, affordability, financial aid, student success, transit, employment, and related issues;


  • Summarizes legislation, government announcements, and institutional policies in accessible language;


  • Assists in developing policy positions, recommendations, and advocacy priorities.





Government Relations & Advocacy Support




  • Prepares briefing notes, speaking points, and background materials for meetings with elected officials and stakeholders;


  • Assists in preparing submissions, consultation responses, and letters to government;


  • Coordinates outreach to municipal councillors, MPPs, MPs, ministries, and community partners;


  • Supports planning and logistics for advocacy meetings, lobby days, delegations, and consultations;


  • Records meeting discussions and tracks follow-up actions and stakeholder contacts.





Student Engagement




  • Works with the Communications team to explain policy issues and advocacy outcomes to students;


  • Supports gathering student feedback through consultations and surveys to inform advocacy priorities.





Collaboration




  • Attends Advocacy & Research team meetings and contributes input on emerging student issues;


  • Collaborates with research and communications staff on advocacy initiatives.





Other




  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager, Advocacy and Research.





Qualifications




  • Strong interest in public policy, government relations, political science, or public administration;


  • Strong writing and analytical skills;


  • Ability to summarize complex information clearly and accurately;


  • Comfortable speaking professionally in meetings and representing the organization;


  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and confidential information;


  • Knowledge of Canadian government structure (municipal, provincial, federal) considered an asset.





Eligibility




  • Must be currently enrolled as a full-time Centennial College student upon applying and for the duration of the term;


  • Demonstrate good academic standing;

  • Must have a valid Social Insurance Number (minimum 6 months to expiry);


  • Mandatory evening/weekend meeting attendance as required;


  • Available to travel to all campus locations.
