Job Description - Alberta Future Leaders Youth Mentors

Who We Are


The Mikisew Cree First Nation (MCFN) operates a professional government organization that supports a wide range of programs and services across education, administration, health, operations, and community-focused departments. Who You Are


You are a motivated, reliable, and community‑focused individual with a passion for working with youth and supporting positive, healthy, and culturally grounded experiences. You bring energy, creativity, and strong leadership skills to the role, and you enjoy planning and delivering meaningful sport, recreation, leadership, and cultural programming.


You are comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, and you communicate respectfully and effectively with youth, families, and community members. You demonstrate cultural awareness, professionalism, and accountability, and you are committed to creating safe, inclusive, and welcoming environments. You are adaptable, proactive, and able to respond positively to the evolving needs of the community while meeting program expectations and timelines.


 


ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Be employed from approximately May 1 - August 28, 2026

  • Organize and coordinate daily sport, recreation, leadership and cultural activities with a fellow mentor

  • Deliver engaging and purposeful programming that responds to community needs

  • Align programming to Arctic Sport & Dene Games in support of the Arctic Winter Games and other programs

  • Fulfill AFL program requirements and host community expectations

  • Promote active and healthy lifestyles

  • Build strong relationships with youth and community


 


EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE: 



  • A criminal record check with vulnerable sector check

  • Previous experience in;

    • working with youth

    • planning, organizing, and implementing sport, recreation, leadership or cultural programs

    • creating safe and welcoming environments

    • working independently and as part of a team



  • Demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Self-motivated, creative, adaptive and flexible problem-solving skills

  • Experience with conflict resolution and working in demanding situations

  • Knowledge of self-care strategies and healthy coping mechanisms

  • Enrollment in a relevant post-secondary program: Native Studies, Physical Education, Recreation, Education, Social Work, Child/Youth Care, or related fields

  • Class 4 or 5 Driver’s License

  • Personal Vehicle

  • Certifications Needed Or Willingness to Obtain: Standard First Aid and CPR Certification, Mental Health First Aid Training / Trauma Informed Care, and Suicide Awareness Training



WORKING CONDITIONS:



  • Programming taking place in both indoor and outdoor settings.

  • Exposure to varying weather conditions while delivering outdoor activities and community events.

  • Flexible work schedule.

  • Active participation in physical activities

  • Frequent interaction with youth, families, community members and local organizations.

  • Collaborative work environment alongside a co-mentor and support from community partners.
