Location
This position involves a mix of outdoor field work and in-person work at City Hall, 426 Brant Street, Burlington. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.
Position Overview
This position will support asset planning and other departments where required, in the collection and/or updating of data related to the City’s infrastructure, for use in the City’s asset management program.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities of this position include:
Using the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) to edit, field collect and geo-reference spatial data for various infrastructure types.
Perform spatial and non-spatial queries on infrastructure data and assets.
Conduct field inspections or data collection of City-owned assets including park, stormwater, and right-of-way infrastructure etc.
Assist in the maintenance of digital files of engineering drawings, plans, reports into the City’s ImageSite document management system.
Update and maintain attribute data within GIS feature classes using ArcGIS Pro.
Review asset records for completeness, accuracy, and consistency across datasets.
Assist with data validation, quality checks, and basic spatial analysis. Apply standardized domains, subtypes, and field values to ensure data integrity.
Support integration of new or updated asset information provided by departments or field collection.
Support basic dataset comparisons using Excel or Power Query to identify discrepancies or missing data.
Carry out other assignments related to asset planning, as required.
Requirements
You are currently enrolled in your 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a post-secondary GIS/Geography, Environmental Studies or Urban Planning program. GIS knowledge is highly recommended. Field data collection or survey experience is also preferred. This position may require occasional travel between sites and/or City facilities and must provide own transportation.
This position requires strong collaboration skills to work effectively with asset planning staff and other departments, contributing positively to shared goals. Excellent communication, adaptability, and a customer-focused approach are essential for clearly conveying information and responding to changing priorities.
