Classification:      Cemetery Labourer


Salary:                  $27.83/hr


Benefits:                In accordance with Collective Agreement


Hours of Work:     Monday - Friday


Position Status:    1 regular, full-time. This is an existing vacancy.

Reporting to the Parks Supervisor, the Cemetery Labourer performs general ground maintenance work, tending graves and memorial sites for the Lake of the Woods Cemetery and properties within the City of Kenora. A cemetery worker must present a polite and respectful manner when dealing with the public. You must be able to work outdoors in all-weather when required by the job. The Cemetery Labourer will ensure all clients and their families are treated with the highest care throughout the bereavement process.


 


Responsibilities:



  • To carry out duties in a safe manner and in accordance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and the City of Kenora’s Health & Safety Policy.

  • Perform a variety of labour tasks on worksites such as cemetery, parks, open spaces, ball fields, arenas, docks, facilities, etc.

  • Carry out all aspects of the interment/disinterment process, from digging to backfill.

  • Ensuring that the cemetery is prepared for visitation at any time, meaning free of litter and debris, well maintained plots, and no safety hazards for visitors to the cemetery, whether in the summer months or winter months.

  • Maintain, in written form:  grave plot books and index cards. Cross reference records in computer.

  • Operate any vehicles or equipment in a safe manner. Routine checks on the vehicles or equipment to ensure they are in working order before operating. This also means to maintain all plant, tools and equipment for the purpose of the job, ensuring good housekeeping and security of all such inventory.

  • Other related duties as assigned.



Qualifications:



  • Must have Grade 12 Diploma or equivalency.

  • Must have a valid Ontario “G” Driver’s License in good standing and maintain license in good standing.

  • Must be physically fit and able to lift 50 lbs. frequently and occasionally up to 100 lbs.

  • Minimum one year record keeping would be considered an asset.

  • One Year related experience in Grounds Maintenance would be considered an asset.

  • Employee must have or be willing to acquire and maintain WHMIS Training and First Aid Training.

  • Must be willing to acquire mandatory legislative certifications as required.

  • Working knowledge of cemetery and/or bereavement industry/legislation would be considered an asset.

  • Great customer service with an ability to effectively meet and deal with the public. Ability to professionally deal with highly emotional situations in the bereavement industry and have the commitment to serving families locally with compassion, dignity, and honesty. Ability to maintain good relationships with clergy, funeral directors, other staff, mourners and visitors to the cemetery.
