Job Summary

The Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) is a defined benefit pension plan that is dedicated to providing a secure retirement income to more than 475,000 members in Ontario’s healthcare sector. More than 700 employers across the province offer HOOPP to their employees. HOOPP’s Legal and External Affairs division (LEAD) provides strategic legal advice to all business units across HOOPP in relation to pension fund investments, compliance, applicable regulation, corporate affairs, commercial transactions, insurance, policies, corporate governance, privacy, conflicts of interests, pension plan administration, litigation management and more. LEAD is comprised of the Corporate & Governance Legal, Investments Legal, Compliance, and Government, Regulatory and Stakeholder Relations teams.

LEAD is looking for a Student Intern to join our dynamic division at HOOPP, supporting the Corporate & Governance Legal team. If you’re looking for a rewarding opportunity at an organization with meaningful core values, consider joining our team. 

With direction and support from, and under the supervision of, their manager and, where applicable, other legal professionals in LEAD, the Summer Intern’s primary responsibilities will be as follows:

  • Conduct legal research on corporate and governance-related issues and present findings to the LEAD management.

  • Support lawyers in advising on legal issues that apply to various areas of law, including technology, corporate/commercial, privacy, pension, employment and litigation management.

  • Assist in the remediation of process gaps and work with team members to identify improvement opportunities and build solutions.

  • Build effective business relationships with individuals and teams across the business.

  • Support lawyers with agreement review, including technology agreements, services agreements, maintenance and support agreements, non-disclosure agreements and other documents.

  • Assist the Privacy Office in privacy risk assessments and incident investigation and remediation.

  • Support lawyers with the maintenance and continuous improvement of HOOPP’s corporate and governance-related policies, processes and repositories of legal resources.

  • Support LEAD divisional-level project work.

  • Collaborate with and provide ad hoc support for the Investments Legal and Compliance teams.

  • Provide support in respect of other reasonable tasks, as requested.

The Student Intern will have the following qualifications, skills and/or attributes:

  • Enrolled in first year of a common law program at a law school at a Canadian university.

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Embrace AI and the efficient use of technology in the delivery of legal services.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks with strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and manage conflicting priorities.

  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy and completeness.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication (both written and verbal) skills to facilitate collaboration with team members.

  • Positive attitude, professional demeanor and a quick learner who is driven and takes initiative.

  • Some experience or interest in technology, corporate/commercial, privacy, pension or employment law or litigation management.

  • Share HOOPP’s core values.

 

The expected hourly rate range for this role is $26.00 to $40.00

 

The actual hourly rate offered to the successful candidate may vary based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, individual's expertise and level of experience applicable to the role they are being offered.
