Forestry Stewardship Intern

Position Summary 

Seabird Island is committed to Forestry stewardship. We are seeking a Forestry Stewardship Intern to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance sustainable forestry management practices.

Under the direction of the Director of Inter-Government Affairs, the Forestry Stewardship Intern provides culturally informed field and office-based support in forestry and stewardship activities to benefit Seabird Island’s and natural resources. This role involves learning and applying technical skills such as block layout, road design, stream and wildlife assessments, Geographic Information Systems data handling, and more. The Forestry Stewardship Intern will also engage in community relations activities that support education and learning for community members.

This is a term contract with an end date of October 31st, 2025.

What you'll do

Planning and Administration

• Assist with the layout and design of forestry blocks and roads.
  


• Participate in mapping and orientation using GIS and topographic maps.
  


• Support data entry and administrative tracking of forestry fieldwork.
  


• Attend relevant workshops and meetings when required.

Service Delivery

• Engage in traversing, GPS data collection, and navigation exercises.
  


• Conduct stream, riparian, and wildlife assessments under guidance.
  


• Support monitoring of post-harvest areas and silviculture obligations.
  


• Assist in co-management and monitoring of natural resources.
  


• Contribute to community outreach and education efforts led by Inter-Government Affairs.

Reporting and Evaluation

• Maintain accurate field notes and logs.
  


• Report progress and findings to staff.
  


• Participate in performance and training evaluations as required.

Team and Interdepartmental Collaboration

• Collaborate with staff and other team members on projects.
  


• Follow guidance and work cooperatively in a team setting.

Other Duties

• Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.
  

What you Bring 

Qualifications

• Minimum Grade 10 completion.
  


• Over 18 years of age.
  


• Physically fit and able to work in varied weather conditions.
  


• Commitment to learning and strong work ethic.
  


• Experience working with Indigenous communities and understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
  


• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

Preferred

• Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
  


• Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.
  


• Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
  


• Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
  


• Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.

Cultural Competency

• Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
  


• Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
  


• Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
