Job Title:              Head Mechanic


Division:               Fleet


Classification:     Head Mechanic


Salary:                  $38.15/hr


Benefits:               In accordance with Collective Agreement


Hours of Work:    Monday to Friday - in accordance with the Collective Agreement


Location:                Kenora, Ontario (In-person)


Position Status:    1 Regular, full-time position. This is an existing vacancy.

Under the direction of the Fleet Services Manager, the Head Mechanic is responsible for the coordination of repairs and maintenance of vehicles and equipment. This individual will direct the work of the fleet maintenance staff. They will provide recommendations for short-and long-term mobile equipment repairs and/or replacements and assist with customer relations and vendor management.


 


Duties:



  • Carries out all duties required of fleet maintenance staff.

  • Supervises fleet staff through work direction and assignment.

  • Works independently to schedule and prioritize inspection and service requirements.

  • Directs, monitors and assigns tasks to fleet staff also checks work and points out errors for correction.

  • Instructs fleet staff, truck drivers and equipment operators in minor service tasks such as completing pre-trip inspections, checking fluid levels and topping up of fluid levels.

  • Directs fleet staff or performs work directly to ensure mechanical repairs are completed as required.

  • Develops and maintains a parts stock inventory with user groups and suppliers.

  • Schedules equipment and vehicles for safety inspections internally and externally. Maintains records of all safety inspections conducted.

  • Ensures compliance with all Provincial, Federal and Municipal statutes and regulations as they pertain to equipment maintenance.

  • Provides recommendations for equipment procurement options.

  • Provides input in budget preparations in conjunction with Fleet Services Manager

  • Receives and responds to complaints, inquiries and requests for information, and deals with all contacts in a courteous and efficient manner to always promote a high standard of public relations.

  • May be required to provide training to other staff.


 


Qualifications:



  • Grade 12 or equivalent.

  • Must possess a current Ontario Government Certificate of Qualifications for a Truck and Coach Technician (310T) and a current Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) Certification



  • Possession of a current Ontario Government Certificate of Qualifications Automotive Service Technician (310S) or a current Ontario Government Certificate of Qualifications Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (421A) would be an asset.

  • Valid Class “G” Driver’s License.

  • Minimum (5) five years progressive experience of Truck and Coach, and Automotive mechanics; considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, air and hydraulic brake systems; Welding/Fabricating; small engines and generators.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills required and a minimum of (1) one year of experience in supervision.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and other relevant software applications.

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills with a proven focus on service delivery.

  • Knowledge of CVOR requirements and regulations is required.



  • Has the ability to issue clearly understandable written and oral instructions.

  • Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time.

  • Must provide own mechanics tools including, but not limited to, drive sockets up to  ½” and wrenches up to 1 ¼”.
