Job Description - Home Support Worker: Summer Student

Location: Fort St. John, BC
Term: Temporary (Canada Summer Jobs 2026)

Start Date: June 1, 2026
Duration: 8 weeks
Hours: 35 hours per week
Wage: $25.95/hour

Position Overview

We are seeking two Summer Student Home Support Workers to join our team through the Canada Summer Jobs program. This role provides meaningful, hands-on experience supporting individuals to live as independently as possible at home and within the community.

Successful candidates will work in a person-centered environment, promoting independence, inclusion, and quality of life while gaining valuable experience in community living and support services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support individuals in developing independence in daily living and life skills
  • Assist with personal care needs such as hygiene, grooming, feeding, and mobility (including lifting and transferring where required)
  • Teach and support skills such as cooking, shopping, money management, and household safety
  • Facilitate recreational, social, educational, and vocational activities
  • Encourage community participation and help individuals build relationships and social connections
  • Follow and implement Person-Centered Plans and Behaviour Support Plans
  • Assist with goal setting and contribute to program planning and evaluation
  • Recognize and respond to emergency or crisis situations in accordance with established procedures
  • Accompany or transport individuals to appointments, activities, and community events
  • Administer medication and delegated health tasks in accordance with policies (e.g., gastrostomy feeding, suction, bowel management, where applicable)
  • Maintain accurate, professional documentation and complete required reports
  • Support health care plans and monitor individuals’ well-being
  • Perform household duties such as cleaning, laundry, meal preparation, and yard maintenance
  • Ensure health and safety standards are consistently met
  • Maintain positive working relationships with team members and external partners
  • Follow organizational policies, procedures, and guiding principles

Qualifications (CSJ Eligibility Requirements)

To be eligible under the Canada Summer Jobs program, applicants must:

  • Be between 19 and 30 years of age at the start of employment (students must be 19 due to internal funding policies)
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection status
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada

Qualifications:

  • Interest in community support, social services, or health care
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and reliable vehicle

Working Conditions

  • Work takes place in clients’ homes and community settings
  • May involve physical tasks such as lifting, transferring, and assisting with mobility
  • Requires flexibility, professionalism, and adherence to safety protocols
This candidate shall be considered a casual employee under the FSJACL's BCGEU collective agreement. All applicable terms and conditions of the collective agreement shall apply, including 10.6% pay in lieu of paid holidays and scheduled vacation, and union membership as a condition of employment.
