Job Description

Get hands-on HSE experience in an active mining and manufacturing site, working directly in the field to improve safety performance.

Our Madoc, ON facility operates a fully integrated mining and manufacturing site where we produce and distribute coloured granules used in shingle production. The operation includes a 400-acre open pit mine, an industrial crushing and colouring plant, distribution services, and ongoing construction projects.

What You’ll Do

As an HSE Co-op Student, you will gain hands-on experience supporting health, safety, and environmental programs in a dynamic industrial setting:

  • Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the HSE management system aligned with systems like ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and COR certification requirements

  • Assist in hazard identification, risk assessments, and implementation of control measures

  • Participate in workplace inspections, behaviour based safety observations, and compliance audits across the plant, mine, and construction areas

  • Support incident reporting, investigations, and root cause analysis, including development of corrective and preventative actions

  • Track and analyze incident trends and key performance indicators (KPIs) (e.g., TRIR, LTIR)

  • Assist in maintaining HSE records, documentation, and reporting systems

  • Contribute to the development and delivery of safety communications, alerts, and training materials

  • Support regulatory compliance activities, including legislative reviews and internal audits

  • Assist in tracking and closing corrective actions from audits, inspections, and incidents

  • Identify opportunities to improve HSE processes, reporting, and overall system effectiveness

  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and leadership teams to promote a strong safety culture

What You Bring

  • Enrollment in a post-secondary Co-op program in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field (preference for senior students)

  • Strong interest in health, safety, and/or environmental programs

  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work effectively in a team environment

  • Strong technical writing ability for an adult learning audience

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and SharePoint

  • Ability to interpret safety legislation, standards, and technical documents

Assets

  • Knowledge of applicable health, safety, and environmental legislation

  • Previous experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment

Functional Requirements & Working Conditions

This role operates in an active mining and industrial manufacturing environment. Candidates must be comfortable working in:

  • A non-climate-controlled plant with varying temperatures

  • Dusty conditions typical of mining and crushing operations

  • An environment requiring frequent walking, standing, and use of stairs

  • Multi-level plant structures with open-grated stairs and elevated platforms

  • Outdoor work areas including an open pit mine and construction zones

Physical & Functional Abilities

  • Ability to safely navigate uneven terrain and industrial environments

  • Comfortable working at heights and on stairs/platforms

  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) including a respirator at all times

  • Capable of performing field-based work for extended periods

  • Strong situational awareness and hazard recognition skills

Location & Transportation

Located 45 minutes north of Belleville, ON, Madoc is a rural community of approximately 1,000 residents. The plant is situated 5 km west of town.

  • Transportation: Reliable personal transportation is required, as public transit is not available

  • Housing: Company-provided housing accommodation is available near the facility (2-minute drive) at no cost

Compensation

  • $22.50 – $25.50 per hour
