Job Description - Invasive Species Program Assistant

INVASIVE SPECIES PROGRAM ASSISTANT


Reporting To – Lead, Special Projects


Location – Kamloops; Burnaby; Williams Lake, Vernon (subject to funding approval)


Hours – 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday with some mornings, evenings, and weekends)


Term – May to September 30, 2026


Compensation:  $45,000- $49,000 starting, per year

The Invasive Species Council of BC is seeking Invasive Species Program Assistants for new and rewarding challenges in an everchanging and collaborative atmosphere. The two primary components of this role include public engagement (coordination, outreach, and education) and, based on funding, could involved field work such as surveying, reporting, control or monitoring.


 


The Invasive Species Council of BC is a provincial non-profit organization working to protect and restore resilient landscapes and habitats from the devastating impacts of invasive species. Over the past 20 years, the Council has developed and delivered outreach, training and skill development programs while working closely with a network of partners.


 


The Invasive Species Program Assistant will have the opportunity to:



  • Gain understanding of invasive species, including identification, reporting, and control.

  • Work with communities, including First Nations, to provide information and resources.

  • Assist in the coordination of workshops and events for community groups.

  • As required, support in the inventory and data collection for field-based work

  • Gain experience in using a number of mobile apps and online tools for real-time recording and reporting data and reporting invasive insects.

  • Prepare communication including social media information, articles and others on invasive species and opportunities for engagement in invasive species learning activities.

  • Support other programs, such as behaviour change, youth activities and events.

  • For Merritt/Kamloops/Vernon/Williams Lake locations- provide information sessions for First Nations and other groups.

    • Support in hosting the educational trailer at community events



  • For Burnaby/Merritt/Kamloops location- support field work, trapping and monitoring as required

    • Support in communication and outreach activities





What will you bring to the team?



  • Post-secondary education in a natural resource or education field.

  • Strong communication skills- both in-person and writing

  • Sound science and field-based skills and an interest in further developing these skills.

  • Attention to detail and takes pride in accuracy and clarity.

  • A positive attitude and an openness to participating in creative problem-solving.

  • A Class 5 Driver’s License (Drivers Abstract will be needed)

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada and BC; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person with refugee status in Canada.


Additional assets:



  • Experience in social media would be beneficial

  • Experience in hauling trailers, would be beneficial


 


This funding for this project is designed to support the development of youth. You must be thirty (30) years of age or younger at the start of project.
