We invite written applications from our sworn members for a position within the Community Safety and Crime Prevention as a Mobile Crisis Rapid Response Team Member (MCRRT). 

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under the direction of the NCO i/c Community Safety and Crime Prevention section, the Mobile Crisis Rapid Response Team Officer will provide primary response to persons in crisis in tandem with a mental health clinician.  The MCRRT officer will attend to calls for service involving Emotionally Disturbed Persons and those in crisis.

It is the goal of the MCRRT to attempt to assess, intervene and reduce the likelihood of incidents involving emotionally disturbed persons and those suffering from mental health issues from becoming critical in nature.  The MCRRT officer will operate collaboratively to identify and connect those with known or suspected mental health issues to the appropriate resources.

The assigned officer shall, in the performance of duties, respect and protect human dignity and maintain and uphold the human rights of all persons.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide a primary response to calls for service involving persons in mental crisis or those suffering from mental health issues. 


• Initiate law enforcement action as necessary to maintain public order by patrolling and providing visual police presence.


• Provide assistance to COAST when required.


• Provide a police resource to SOAR activities and functions.

• Participate in collaborative activities with other units in the police service and the community, to mitigate situations of critical mental illness and acutely elevated risk as required.


• Provide additional support for those persons not in a psychiatric facility yet exhibit signs of erratic behaviour.

• Research, prepare and present reports pertaining to specific Service-related issues.


• Participate in various committees as required.


• Carry out duties in accordance with the applicable provisions of the Community Safety and Policing Act, S.O. 2019 and other lawful assignments.


• Attend training as required.


• Be accountable to supervision.


• Perform such other duties as are lawfully assigned.

Knowledge 

• A thorough understanding and good working knowledge of the Service’s organizational structure, Routine Orders, Policy and Procedures, and the Adequacy Standards Regulation.


• Training, experience or academic knowledge that demonstrates interest, knowledge and competency with respect to mental health and behaviour issues. 


• Thorough knowledge of policing legislation (Safer Ontario Act), the Mental Health Act, and applicable case law.

• Coach Officer

• General psychology, and sociology courses

Skills

• Excellent communicative skills specifically while interacting with those in crisis or suffering from developmental issues.


• Ability to effectively interact with emotionally disturbed persons and those suffering from mental health issues.


• Written communication skills.


• Ability to work productively without direct supervision.


• Demonstrated time-management and organizational skills.

Abilities

• Ability to exercise good judgment and make good decisions.


• Be creative in problem-solving and be a solution-oriented individual.


• Ability to observe, retain and prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports and operate general office equipment.


• Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels of comprehension and to handle the public with courtesy and authority.


• Ability to work collaboratively with professionals from numerous service agencies within the community.


• Must be capable of handling multi-tasks and producing work under strict and definitive deadlines.


• Proven ability to work productively without supervision.


• All other qualifications the position justifies.
