Are you curious about what’s happening on campus? Do you enjoy digging into the facts and sharing important information with others? The Nugget is looking for a News Editor to lead our coverage of campus events, policies, and student issues. You don’t need to be an experienced journalist—just someone who loves research, values accuracy, and wants to help keep students informed.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:
- Attending monthly NAITSA Senate meetings and writing recaps
- Write/create 1 story a week, whether it’s written or digital — openness to multimedia storytelling (appearing in video, podcasts, social media) is a must
- Oversee the news section, assigning stories to contributors and light editing of submissions
- Some administrative work, like emailing contributors recap emails after they pick something up
- Finding and pitching relevant news stories each week
- Working independently to interview, investigate, research and write
- Responding to breaking news situations and occasionally writing quick coverage of events
- Attend press conferences, media events, as needed
- Collaborate with the rest of the editorial team to cover everything NAIT
This might be the job for you if…
- You’re a naturally curious person who enjoys asking questions and finding answers however they can. Working in news means prioritizing stories, asking why, and holding people accountable through fair and transparent reporting
- You have strong research skills and attention to detail. Some stories require digging, and you should be comfortable seeking out those answers
- You’re a great communicator and know how to stay organized. You’ll be the lead of our news section, so you need to be able to interview and lead a variety of people, along with keeping your stories and your contributors’ stories on deadline!
- You’re comfortable being a leader and setting the tone for your section. Contributors will look to you for story ideas and guidance. Your senior editor and editor-in-chief will be there to support you, but we want someone who can take charge and make decisions.
- You can respond quickly to urgent situations. The news section is demanding — as breaking news happens, you'll need to react quickly; but, with the support of your Editor-in-Chief and Senior Editor, you'll learn how to pivot under pressure and shine in any situation.
