What is the COVE Internship Program? 

We are looking for bright, talented individuals at the post-secondary level, interested in the marine sector, who are looking to gain valuable, hands-on work experience. You will be placed with a host company in the marine sector and will be working on a core project for their business. Projects are interdisciplinary and students will be collaborating closely with other students and staff from different disciplines. 

The COVE internship is a collaboration with numerous companies that are leaders in the marine and marine technology sector. We are diligent in placing students in a role with a company that is well aligned with their discipline of study, skillset, and future career ambitions. Canada’s marine sector is growing and thriving and contributes millions of dollars to our national economy on an annual basis. The Opportunity: 

Ashored is a Nova Scotia-based ocean technology company specializing in sustainable, dual-use maritime systems with a proven record in on-demand fishing gear and subsea monitoring. These systems combine hardware, software, robust acoustic communications, and AI-enabled Edge Computing.   

What you will be doing:  

Specific responsibilities and project details will be finalized closer to the start of the summer internship, once project planning is complete. The successful candidate will support Ashored’s technical and operations teams on ocean technology initiatives, gaining hands-on experience with subsea systems and marine deployments. 

What you will bring: 

• Foundational knowledge of oceanography, marine systems, and subsea instrumentation (e.g., sensors, hydrophones, transducers).


• Familiarity with underwater acoustics, including acoustic communications and positioning tools such as modems, beacons, and pingers.


• Introductory experience with electronics and embedded systems (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, microcontrollers) and the ability to support hardware assembly, testing, and troubleshooting in marine environments.


• Exposure to subsea data collection, logging, quality control, and basic programming or scripting (Python, MATLAB) for analysis or system testing.


• Understanding of low‑power, battery‑based systems and comfort working with mechanical components such as pressure housings, connectors, and cabling.


• Awareness of subsea deployment challenges (biofouling, corrosion, pressure, retrieval) and familiarity with sustainable fisheries practices, including on‑demand/ropeless fishing technologies.


• Basic concepts in signal processing, edge computing, and data‑driven decision making for marine systems.


• Ability to follow test plans, SOPs, and safety procedures, with awareness of relevant regulatory and operational considerations in fisheries and marine technology. 

A valid driver's license is required.
