The Students' Association of MacEwan University (SAMU) is a non-profit organization working independently from MacEwan University to support students. Our purpose is to enrich the student experience by focusing on their non-academic needs through an array of student-driven programs and services.


 


We are governed by elected student representatives who set the strategic vision on behalf of students. With support from over 50 full-and part-time staff, we keep our mandate student-focused to achieve the vision.

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Programs Assistant is to coordinate the planning and operation of SAMU’s Programs department including, Student Refugee Program, Culture Café, Free Range Connections podcast, Artworks Factory and Queer Time Tuesday.


 


SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES


 


Programming – 90%


 



  • Work on a team of 2 Programs Assistant to research, plan and execute monthly programming.

  • Assist Programs Manager with Student Refugee Program operations and be an active member of the Local Committee Group

  • Be the face of Free Range Connections podcast, working with SAMU Marketing department for coordination of filming and establishing creative content

  • Engage with students to encourage participation and build community connections on campus

  • Assist in compiling programs reports and metrics for programming

  • Research new and creative programming related to programming that meets student’s interests.

  • Ensure SAMU programming is relevant, innovative, and creative, while adhering to SAMU’s Strategic Plan and staying within budget

  • Weekly team meetings with Programs department staff.


 


Other – 10%



  • Other duties and projects assigned.

  • Opportunities to support other departments’ activities as approved by Programs Manager.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


 



  • Preference will be given to current MacEwan Students registered in a minimum of one class during either Fall 2026 or Winter 2027 term.


 


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


 



  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office.

  • General knowledge of SAMU is considered an asset.

  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and collaboration skills.

  • Possess strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently.


 


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS



  • Risk Assessment and Management

  • First Aid

  • WHMIS



WORKING CONSIDERATIONS


 



  • Primarily sedentary- sitting, standing, and walking.

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time, use a computer, and other office equipment in addition to occasionally lifting up to 20 pounds


 


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT


 


Up to 20 hours/week with office hours between 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. Will work around the student's schedule. Some evening and weekend work may be required for this position.
