Job Description - Recreation Coordinator

Department:    Recreation & Community Wellness


Reports to:      Manager of Recreation & Community Wellness


Location:          Port Hood, Nova Scotia


Position:           Full-time, Seasonal [35 hours per week; May - August 2026]

POSITION SUMMARY:


The Recreation Summer Student Coordinator supports the planning, coordination, and delivery of recreation programs, camps, and activities for various communities within the Municipality during the summer season. This position is responsible for guiding the Team Leads and Summer Students to assist with program logistics, scheduling, participant engagement, and day-to-day operational support and guidance. Travel within the Municipality is required and, occasionally, regional and provincial travel may occur.



JOB DUTIES:



  • Facilitate the coordination and delivery of summer recreation programs, events, camps and activities, including program setup, takedown, and on-site operations.

  • Supervise, and evaluate recreational activities and programs for all ages and abilities across the Municipality.

  • Monitor program activities to ensure quality service delivery and participant safety.

  • Complete assigned administrative tasks related to program delivery, including assisting with attendance tracking, reporting, and program documentation.

  • Provide day-to-day support and guidance to summer recreation staff and/or volunteers.

  • Assist with staff scheduling, break coverage, and communication of daily program needs.

  • Act as a point of contact for staff during program hours, escalating issues as required.

  • Provide customer service to program participants, parents/guardians, and members of the public.

  • Respond to routine inquiries and support participant registration and attendance.

  • Promote a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment for all participants.

  • Assist with maintaining supplies, equipment inventories, program materials, and sanitization of sport and game equipment.

  • Support safe work practices and contribute to a positive team environment.

  • Support adherence to safety guidelines, policies, and procedures, reporting violations promptly.



  • Identify improvement opportunities and assist with initiatives that support the development of the Recreation and Community Wellness Department.

  • Conduct and attend safety, team, and training meetings as required.



  • Operate assigned municipal vehicles with GPS systems and regularly verify that the system is functioning correctly, reporting any issues promptly.

  • Maintain punctuality, reliable, adaptability, and model professional conduct and strong leadership behaviour.

  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrate accountability, sound judgment, and initiative while maintaining required records.

  • Customer-service focused with professional communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently while supporting strong teamwork and problem-solving expertise.

  • Experience or interest in hiking, sports, and physical activities.

  • Comfortable working in office or outdoor settings, to include standing, walking, lifting, and moving equipment, or exposure to varying weather conditions.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends if required.

  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality, ethical conduct, and compliance with municipal policies, privacy legislation, and professional standards.


 


QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Currently enrolled, or graduated from, a post-secondary program in Recreation, Kinesiology, Education, Social Sciences, or a related field; a combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Required to live within the Municipality of the County of Inverness.

  • Experience working with children, youth, or community programs (paid or volunteer).

  • Proven experience in developing and organizing recreation programs for a diverse demographic of participants.

  • Proven experience supervising paid and/or volunteer staff, including the scheduling, guiding, and direction of work.

  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification considered an asset.

  • Training, knowledge, or certification in High Five, Fundamental Movement Skills, OCC Field-leader training, NLS National Lifeguard are considered an asset.

  • Class 5 Driver’s License, with clean drivers abstract.

  • Ensure all policies and procedures set forth by the Municipality of the County of Inverness are always observed.

  • Report all work situations which are suspected of being unhealthy or unsafe.

  • Report any employee whose on-the-job performance or actions contravenes established safety procedures or work practices.

  • Report all near-misses and incidents immediately.

  • Report related injuries or property damage regardless of severity.

  • Submit reports on accidents and other hazardous conditions discovered and promptly attend to all hazardous situations.
