Job Description - Recreation Summer Student

Department:    Recreation & Community Wellness


Reports to:       Summer Student Coordinator


Location:          Port Hood/Inverness/Cheticamp/Pleasant Bay/Margaree, NS


Position:           Full-time, Seasonal [35 hours per week; July - August]

POSITION SUMMARY:


The Recreation Summer Student supports the delivery of recreation programs and activities to various communities within the Municipality during the summer season. Under the direction and guidance of the Recreation Summer Student Coordinator, the Summer Recreation Student assists with program facilitation, participant supervision, customer service, and general operational support. This role provides hands-on facilitation of recreation programming while contributing to a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment for participants. Travel within the Municipality will be required.


 


JOB DUTIES:



  • Assist with delivering recreation programs, camps, special events, and leisure activities for youth (age 5-18) with different needs and abilities, including assisting and supervising participants at day camps, arts and crafts events, sporting activities, etc.

  • Promote an inclusive and respectful environment and oversee activities to ensure participant safety and appropriate behaviour.

  • Provide guidance, encouragement, and support to participants during activities.

  • Support program setup, cleanup, equipment handling, and assist with sanitizing supplies and sports or game equipment.

  • Assist with attendance tracking and program documentation as required, and report participant concerns, behavioural issues, or incidents to the Summer Student Coordinator promptly.

  • Promote engagement for recreation programs and wellness initiatives, providing professional customer service and positive interactions with co-workers, residents, participants, and parents/guardians.

  • Represent the municipality in a positive and professional manner and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Collaborate with co-workers to promote a safe and positive workplace culture, attending safety meetings and training as required.

  • Operate assigned municipal vehicles with GPS systems and regularly verify that the system is functioning correctly, reporting any issues promptly.

  • Strong punctuality, reliable, adaptability, and ability to communicate concerns.

  • Interact positively with children, youth, parents/guardians, and members of the public.

  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrate accountability, sound judgment, and initiative.

  • Capable to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced, active environment, or changing conditions.

  • Commitment to a safe work culture, incorporating safe work practices in daily activities.

  • Passion for personal or professional development, and public engagement.

  • Customer-service focused with professional communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently while supporting collaboration for teamwork.

  • Experience or interest in hiking, sport, and physical activities.

  • Comfortable working in office or outdoor settings, to include standing, walking, lifting, and moving equipment, or exposure to varying weather conditions.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends if required.

  • Responsible to maintain confidentiality with respect to all matters concerning the municipality.



QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Motivated, responsible, and performance orientated.

  • Required to live within the Municipality of the County of Inverness.

  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification considered an asset.

  • Previous experience working with children, youth, or community programs considered an asset (paid or volunteer).

  • Class 5 Driver’s License, with clean drivers abstract considered an asset.

  • Ensure all policies and procedures set forth by the Municipality of the County of Inverness are always observed.

  • Report all work situations which are suspected of being unhealthy or unsafe.

  • Report any employee whose on-the-job performance or actions contravenes established safety procedures or work practices.

  • Report all near-misses and incidents immediately.

  • Report related injuries or property damage regardless of severity.

  • Submit reports on accidents and other hazardous conditions discovered and promptly attend to all hazardous situations.
